hi all again!got more shots of my toolbox.a little something about the box,it is actually made to be a 3-tiered box.the mostly used tools sits in the top and middle tier.the bottom houses those not so frequently used tools.the box is made entirely of aviation grade aluminium and stainless steel sheets.rivets were used to fasten all of them together.measurements for the box are L20 x W12 x H11 :)

That is so cool. Great job on building it. I really like the arched top, compared to most flat top boxes. Just by building that says so much about your attention to detail and quality, like the old machinist box "a working resume".

So I got a question, doesn't the FAA require Aviation tools be shadowed in foam for FOD control? I ask, because i'm studying for my A&P and am thinking about getting into Corporate/General civilian maintenance after 8+ years on Gov't planes (HC-130H's).

That's a good looking box! I love the color and the top.

What wrench sizes do you keep? (Any of you A&P's). I have the chance to get some Snap On angle wrenches for cheap, but its the 14 piece set, so it includes 1" and idk what the next three larger ones are off the top of my head. Do you need wrenches over 7/8 typically? The combo wrench set stops there so I wondered.

It all depends on the aircraft you work on, but over 1 inch is fairly common for hydraulic lines on pumps and reservoirs plus some fuel lines and other misc stuff. At least that holds true for the CRJs. For standard combos, i have up to 7/8. I have the 15pc HF service wrench set which is 3/4 to 1 5/8 (well worth the price and held up great). And the 14pc angle wrench set from northern tool. Add in a couple of adjustables and a knipex plier wrench I have most things covered. Never needed over 7/8 box end but plently larger open ends but again YMMV depending on the airframe.

I'm at a 145 station right now overhauling components, but I'm looking to get my A&P and move somewhere with a hangar. I think you answered my question perfectly, thanks!

Anyone else ever freak out an aircraft owner by using a red fruit rollup to simulate a hydraulic leak next to a wheel ? ;)

plus you can add to his concern by poking a finger into the *fluid* & tasting it to confirm that it's 5056..

Here is my box that I use everyday. Sheet metal stuff is provided by the shop so no need to bring my own. Been thinking of getting something a little bigger but we will see.

scsracing what model box is that? You make your own top?

Its a KRL756 but an older model (still lock and roll ) with a iroko wooden top. Think i'd prefer a big tool cart with 4 casters as this is a pain to roll around !!

Here's a few pictures of my toolbox. I didn't get all the drawers though. Marco 4s single bay with Kaizen tool foam for organization. Here's the link if you're interested, there's a few distributors so shop around for the best deal!

I made the socket rails myself. Bought some HF rails and screwed them to a 1/2" thick oak strip and put a knob on them so I can take the whole rail with me if I need to. Works great as it doesn't tip over and spill sockets everywhere!

Very nice boxes. Do any of you use SK here?

off topic: quick question. In order to work as an aircraft mechanic/technician in the US, do you need to have an FAA A&P license? I ask because I just recently relocated to MI, and was an aircraft mechanic in Hong Kong before.

The place I work at has a mixture of licensed A&P's, just A's and some totally unlicensed mechanics. I do believe that the unlicensed guys have been signed off to do repairs but a licensed mechanic has to sign off on all of their work before an inspector signs it off as complete. I just got my airframe certificate in early February and I am still in school working on my powerplant cert. Your best bet would be looking at websites that get contractors jobs with repair stations, check out www.launchtws.com.

I've been planning on doing something similar although I was thinking of using thinner stock, maybe 1/4 to 3/8ths. I already have the HF rails for it. Just need to get rid of those pesky stickers.

+1 on the stickers. Holy hell are they annoying to remove. My only concern with thinner stock was warping and overall strength; especially for the bigger sockets. I've got a 1/2" drive with sockets that go up to 1-1/8" and have no problems with the wood holding up to the weight.

Just be sure to polyurethane/clear coat ALL sides to prevent warping/movement.
