Hi All,

I just wanted to pass on my experience with attempting to have planitbuilders.ca build my garage.

1. Nov 11 Planitbuilders rep comes out to house to quote on a 25X28 garage build. He setup transit and took measurements on elev change (roughly 11 inches out from front to back).. So basically i thought he had done everything right and I agreed to the project completion price. But if they are unable to pour in winter I wouldn't give deposit , give deposit in Spring when they can pour. He assures me they can pour.

2. Feb 13 (3 mths later) and planit builders has done NOTHING. I request deposit back because absolutely nothing has been done. resolve issues.

3. Feb 26 They get snow cleared and temporary hut setup with heater/insulated tarps to defrost ground.
5 days later (1 heater has basically just browned the top grass)

4. Feb 28, Planitbuilders project co-ordinators calls me and says he needs another $1800 for concrete because concrete guy says i need retaining wall.

I basically tell him Bu!!$h1t as they should have known this from the beginning and I'm not paying an extra 1800 cuz the concrete guy is broke this month or ran out of booze for his ludricous suggestions.

At this point I fired planitbuilders.ca and have had 3 concrete guys out for different quotes.. All 3 guys said the original concrete guy was just looking for more money as I expected.

Planitbuilders.ca is an in-competent company , that I wouldn't hire to build a storage shed.

I am now going to GC the build and my stress level has dropped dramatically.

I'm looking forward to having my friend frame it and help out as much as possible. I will be sub contracting the concrete work , and getting gas and electrical run to the garage. The rest I will be doing myself.

I hope this helps anyone considering using this company for garage building.

Thanks,
Par

You did get your deposit back, didn't you?

Partially

1.So they had already bought the permits ($350) which i paid for as they were transferable. OKay with this.
2. I paid them $700 for the plans (arnd here its about .80 sq ft for design)
Okay with this.
3. Concrete guy for clearing snow and setting up temp hut (which took him less then 2 hours), planitbuilders is telling me he charged them $945 for that. That figure of $945 is ridiculous and i have placed a complaint with the BBB.
(Not okay with this)

Demand proof of this in the form of an invoice form the concrete guy.

Most contractors will provide this to you as they usually charge 20% premium for subcontracted work.

When I was in industry, some contractors would include copies of such invoices with their bill.

just as an idea, i would maybe go the small claims court route, BBB probably wont be able to do much about your money,

I did get a copy of the invoice from the so called concrete guy, but the parent company could have easily adjusted the figures on invoice cause it was submitted as a plain word document invoice. BBB is currently working on it and for $500 i don't think small claims is worth it.

some times just a filled out small claims paper copyed and sent to the person ...WAKES them up as no body wants to go to court..or get a lawyer and sue him for consumer fraud most lawyers will do it for free and take payment only if the case is won.
