Avoid Weiser "Smart Key" Locks

Mine stopped working on my garage door. Fortunately it stopped in the open position.

I bought a Schlage with no fancy junk to replace it.

After doing some net research the Weisers are insecure and are prone to failing like mine did.

My recommendation is to avoid Weiser.

Here is what they look like and the re-key tool in action.

I experienced the opposite. Never had an issue with the Weisers( 5 sets on our current house and multiple sets on past houses) but have a Schlage commercial lock on the man door of my shop and it started giving me issues a month after I got it. It still "works" but getting the key out of the deadbolt is an exercise in patience. You have to push back in on the cylinder a certain way with your finger before it'll let the key go. The first time it happened we were just about to leave on vacation for 2 weeks. If I hadn't figured it out the wife would have not been pleasant as there's no way I'm leaving the key in the door of my shop for 2 weeks! That reminds me...I have to get that warrantied.

The Weisers have also out-performed the 2 Emtech lock sets we have as well. They jam up constantly. I've tried graphite and reinstalling both sets in case something was crooked and binding but same result every time . Also, one is a fancy combination number type setup. The keypad scratches if you look at the damn thing sideways.

As for the Weisers being less secure, the most indestructible deadbolts in the world are useless in a wooden door frame. To make a difference in a metal door frame, the Weisers bolt woukd have to be made of some very soft or very brittle metal to be ineffective. If the thief wants in, he'll get in.

sounds like the nut on the back of the cylinder plug needs adjusting. was this lock re keyed or anything? probably a simple fix for a lock person

You're probably right. It has never been rekeyed or opened up though. The people that built my door and frame took it out of the box and installed it without midifying anything on it. That doesn't mean it wasn't out of adjustment when it was made I guess and eventually went out of spec on its own. I'll get it looked at at some point in sure.

I have several Kwikset locks with SmartKey and have had no problems. I wonder if Weiser and Kwikset are related.

My "smart key" stopped working on day 2 of ownership on the knob (luckily, in the open position). The deadbolt is still working. After reading about how to "fix" the bricked lockset, I'm going to replace it with a non-weiser product. I hate spending money twice on the same thing, especially when buying something that's touted as "superior".

I found out that Weiser's warranty only extends to the door of the shop where you purchased it.
