Awesome lumber yards

So I went out today to buy the materials for my cabinets. Really disappointed in the quality of the materials from the big box stores. The good old days of lumber yards are few and far between.

Today I called on a lumber store that I though was primarily hardwood and millwork only. I asked if they had plywood and they said yes. I jumped in my truck and went down to their shop. I was like a kid in a candy store. It has been years since I saw lumber of this quality. Their prices are actually quite competitive and we're actually less than Lowe's. Top that with not having to pay anything in advance for the order. The only killer was the delivery fee of 8 bucks lol!

Any good lumber yards in your neck of the woods?

There is one about a half hour away that has good plywood and hardwood, and they custom make stairs for not much more than what the materials would cost me.

I haven't bought ply from Baird Brothers but everything else I've gotten there has been top notch. When I picked up my hardwood flooring I overheard and saw a guy loading up cherry veneer ply for cabinets and it looked primo.

Years back living in Milwaukee(1983) I stopped at a local big box store to pick up a few 2X4's. Had my checkbook (remember it was 1983) but no ID. They wouldn't accept my check w/o ID, (like I'm writing a bad check on a few 2x4's). After exchanging pleasantries with the store manager I walked out, went to a family lumber yard near where I was starting a house build, opened an account (with no ID) and walked out with $200 in lumber on my name.
Guess where I bought every stick for that house and two others?

Clicked to say Terry Lumber and you beat me to it. they are the only ones who would surface a pile of reclaimed oak I am trying to incorporate into my new house.

As soon as you say reclaimed everyone thinks it's barn wood with nails in it. I had 2x10s split in half on a bandsaw, they surfaced them to 7/8 and 3/4 and the result is wood character that can't be bought anywhere.

they're located in the middle of a national park. go hiking or biking while you're there.

I go to quite a few. Side note, the ones that are left are the better ones that survived the bad times.

I get all my domestic hardwoods from Pollum natural resources in Elba MI
Great prices, all common hardwoods, 3 miles from home.

Michigan lumber (Flint MI) is great lumber yard. Still has a raised loading dock.
Trim 1x barn has a wood floor, sliding door, massive beams holding up 2nd floor that has moldings. All 1x stock is stored horizontally with lengths marked on the ends of each board.
They have an extensive selection of different grades of pine. Have fir flooring in stock. Great selection of common ( a few older types ) mouldings.

Dillman & Upton ( Rochester MI ) has a great selection of mouldings that blow away anything that's at a big box store.

If those places don't have what I need , I take the 1 1/2 hr trek to
LL Johnson workbench ( Charlotte MI )
They have a large selection of hardwoods, plywood, & exotics.
It's built around the city water tower

Big box store usually depend on where they got their load of lumber. I picked some really 2x4s at Menard's and didn't even need any at the time. I just thought they were nice enough to grab them at the time. I've found some at HD and the whole bunk looked like **** so I went elsewhere.

Another Baird brothers fan here. I just installed hardwood flooring and have a bunch of crown in the garage waiting to be installed. Great quality all around.

I'm lucky to live in a town with a fairly large lumber mill and a specialty plywood mill.

They both have factory outlets that sell to the public. Red pine or White pine "planer outs" usually sell for around 50-75¢ a board foot for1x6 kiln dry up to 14', 1x12 for $1/ft
I bought some maple outs a while ago for $80 for 100 board ft lot.

There's some defects to work around, like loose knots, sap inclusions or splits, but nothing too major. It's often better than what you see for sale at the box stores as #1.

The plywood mill has similar deals on some really nice stuff. cherry, oak, maple.. usually about 1/3 the normal price, less for seconds.

There’s a Paxton hardwoods in Denver that I always use. Plywood selection is pretty limited though. You can get pretty much anything else you want there though.

I've been going to Fingerle Lumber in Ann Arbor since I was a kid with my Dad. They have so much stuff from framing lumber, some hardwoods, and a full service division for windows doors, etc. More or less anything you'd need to build a house, and can get whatever else you need. Old time place still printing the invoices on tractor feed dot matrix with little green CRT tubes the sales guys squint into.

Its been a few years since I've messed around with hardwoods, but Armstrong Millworks on M59 in Highland, MI had the most amazing selection of stuff I've ever seen in person.

Capital City Lumber in Raleigh, NC. It's the kind of place that's been around unto forever. Retail area inside is crammed floor to low ceiling with all sorts of hardware, architectural detailing & such, and narrow aisles to fit it all in. Lumber barn after lumber barn, all sorts. Started in 1947. Good folks.

Harken Lumber - Aplington, Iowa. First time dealing with them was when I had a new shop built for my business. I was sold on the service. No big box store can compete. All family run and they get to know you on a first name basis. Have questions for one of them and he's not there? You'll get the personal cell # of who ever you're looking for. I had a new house built a few years ago, used them exclusively for all the structural lumber, shingles, cabinets, etc.... If I ever build again It would only be through them.... And they deliver whether it be an entire truckload or single sheet of plywood....

Hartland Lumber in Clarksburg, WV. Pretty much any specialty wood you need, he has or can get. Also he had 1/4 inch drywall when I needed it. Couldn't find it anywhere else. For straight construction stuff, I go to New Martinsville Supply in Pennsboro, WV. Has everything from block to trusses to appliances and a good tool selection. People know what is what, too.
