Okay Im not talking about pens just thrown in a drawer. I mean Awesome, unusual, creative storage options for writing utensils. Heres what I use. Its a pulley off a 8-71 blower. A JIF peanut butter lid upside down fits perfectly inside to keep everything from falling through. I got it with a tool box. A guy I was buying a tool box from wouldn't come off the price so I asked if he would throw it in. He said sure he has no use for it anymore. Here it is:)

My grandfather had an old V-8 distributor cap where the leads were drilled out and held pencils. I was thinking about finding a 12 or 16 cylinder one and doing the same thing.

It's two inserts for whats called a swinging bucket. It is used to hold glass tubes inside a laboratory centrifuge. Also works really well to hold my pens, pencils and small screwdrivers.

The distributor cap was always the old standby, used to be on every parts counter, garage etc.

I use a "chock full of nuts" can.
I think this is really cool because I always drink folgers coffe and I wanted a new metal can to hold my pens so the next time at the grocery store I bought "chock full of nuts" then the next step I did was made cups of coffe over the next couple of days. I consider myself to be the most dedicated in my pen holder. I'll post a picture here shortly.

I have high power tiny puck magnets glued to my silver sharpies(and hf tape measures) stuck to benches and tables.

Possibly you misread the title of this thread but it included the words "...Let's see em".

It didn't ask "Write about em". Which is a little ironic because it's a thread about writing utensils.

Here's mine -sorta. It's a cast iron placque with a pouch at the bottom. It's said to be for holding mail - like outgoing mail at a dealership. My wife thought her father said it was for matches. Either way, it does a good job of holding pens and pencils above a clipboard hanging on a nail below it.

-This photo isn't of mine; mine is bare cast iron, lightly rusted. I'm debating whether to paint it like this one, leave it alone, or derust, shine-up and wax like some of the Naked Vise pervs here>:rolleyes2

This is what I have on my desk in the garage "office" but I don't have a pic and it's damn cold outside. It's an old distributor cap from a V12 Jag.

It's even odder how you didn't contribute with an explanation or a picture. :shocking:

Crazy as it sounds, that V8 dizzy cap pen holder sounds like a business idea to me. You could sell those all over North America, what other cool ideas did your grandpa have :)

My favorites for magic markers, colored pencils, and pens were coffee mugs...
Problem was: Cousin Ole would fill them with coffee and stir with the pencils..

no pix 'cause i'm at work.
on my workbench at home its and old coffee mug.
but a buddy of mine used to have the inside housing/carrier from a box of bullets(.38spc i think) to hold his sharpies on his workbench.
i thought that was pretty clever.

On my box I use a snapon socket mug.before I used to use an upside down powerstroke piston head that was cracked from end to end, but some one needed it more than I did I guess.

At home I use a snapon green mini box top and bottom to store my markers.

I use the bottoms of beer cans but same principle (for fasteners).

For writing stuff (it's way more than that though, usually a couple of screwdrivers, scissors, flashlight, and assorted other office type stuff) I either use a dollar store mesh pen holder but I have these metal mini christmas buckets I got at target for like 40 cents; say "ho ho ho" on the side on the wrapped burlap:bounce:. I don't weld so I don't have anything interesting. Have made holders out of wood before but don't like the time to make vs. benefit on those. Have one screwed into my pegboard (3 sided I think).

My pictures are in my ferrari which is in the shop which is located in antarctica.

You could make a truly epic one out of a rotor or wheel bearing huband some sheet metal if you want to even make it lazy susan style (with the hub) if it still turns okay (which it probably don't if it's a bunk part). Only drawbacks is this would take up too much space and be really heavy.

Or...

An upside-down piston. I think a train piston (or any larger sized piston) would work okay (without boring) but would be expensive to procure.

Let's see:

Hershey chocolate syrup can (do they still make it in those? :dunno: - Yes I'm a chocoholic...)

Giant Marvin the Martian coffee cup.

A small coffee can in the shop for markers and lumber crayons, and the like.

One my daughter made in grade school, (she's a freshman in Collage now...)

A giant "company" coffee cup in the Kitchen in Cobalt blue (Got to match the color schem...) with pens pencils, scissors an antique ice pick, and a pair of dykes for those ****** plastic straps Costco sees fit to strap everything together with...

SWMBO keeps artist brushes in an old mason/Ball jar.

Not for pencils, but I have an old heat sink I keep templates reference cards and other flat things in.

This is one of the many parts we make, in this case a ball nut.

Awesome  Reminds me of a guy a few cubes down that has a multi $100k part that was scrapped and uses it as a paperweight.

Sorry, nothing from me. I'm just not a fan of vertical pen storage. For me they are either in my pocket or in a drawer.

How do you manage to keep them horizontal in your pocket? Do you sit a lot?

I have a couple of odd ones on my desk at school. One is the top half of a L head briggs crankcase that got scrapped. The other is the coil out of a spa motor.

I have an awesome white plastic angled block that my wife says is for lipstick and eyeliner. It holds sharpies in the lipstick openings and pencils / pens in the eyeliner slots. It stays in the bottom of my wall cabinet and is just plain perfect for the job.

I use a Wright Cylone piston from an old B-17. It holds my TV and stereo remotes and a few markers for the whiteboard in the shop.

Here's some trivia or perhaps useful info. My neighbor, a woodworker, was complaining about pencil points. Standard pencil sharpener's leave a point that's too thin. Carpenter's pencils are more time consuming to deal with. I came to the conclusion that you need a more blunt point on a standard pencil like what they put on a golf pencil. Through some internet sleuthing I found the answer on how to get that particular cut on your standard Eberhard-Faber. Via an article in Golf Digest, the sharpener you can use for this is a ladies eyeliner pencil sharpener. My local Dollar General has these in a package of two for $1.

I think a few people here have this style.

This is my favorite one for now. It reminds me of George Jetson for some reason but it was made closer to the time of George Jefferson :lol_hitti
