My solution

I used black Kiesan foam from fastcap, easy to work with and doesnt get too grungy, it helps though that I wipe down all tools before I put them away.

I kind of like that look. Limiting for quick expansion for sure but I still like the way it looks. Did you do this for all of the drawers? If so, could you post a few pictures of them?

Thank you all for the inspiration! Once I got my hands on a good set of Craftsman 84T (USA made of course) ratchets I wanted to keep them from sliding around, so I made this insert using $6 of spongy craft foam from Michael's layered to the desired depth with spray adhesive.

I left the left side open for longer tools and quick expansion for the reasons that some of you mentioned, and after a somewhat grimy job replacing the valve cover gasket on the Northstar in my wife's STS the grey foam wiped up easy.

I can't afford to "waste" all that storage space. I probably have more tools in a standard size top box than most people put in a Snap On condo...

I think the foam looks great and bet it was time consuming.for me i guess i was fortunate that the quality of liner that came in my custom order box was in no need of upgrade.my tools stay placed and dont move around.opening and shutting drawers hasn't affected for 12 years.my drawers are full and organized and i occasionally add here and there but seldom need to.the only issue i see with foam as mentioned in another post is adding tools but some fellas may not mind or they might wait and do foam when they think their tool collection is complete.it wouldn't be for me but thats only an opinion.

The socket holders are Lisle and the wrench trays are Sortatool.

IIRC I got them both from Sears a few years ago.

Not that I don't like what you've done.. it must have been a lot of work and looks great.. but I've tried it and it didn't work for me.

I have to work on my car outside and hate getting there with the wrong size socket.. so I take them all with me.. this is my home made solution.
