Prybar never failed me.... Others may have more to offer. I've mostly done that job on Hondas.

I replaced the half shafts on my mother in laws Pontiac Vibe not long ago.The passenger side was a breeze; all I had to on that one was use a pry bar.On the drivers side I didn't have enough room to use a pry bar.I done some looking on the net and found the tool you linked to above.I didn't have time to wait for it ship so I fabed my own.I had a price.of 1 1/2" thick Delrin so I took it to the handsaw and made a wedge with a handle on it.A couple of blows with my 24oz dead blow hammer and it pooped right loose.ill see if I can get a couple of pictures of it when I get home tonight.

That tool is only good if you have the room to use it in; most times a pry bar and several blows with a BFH will pop them right out.

In some cases, you can't get access to use a pry bar due to design of ****** or center trans brace support blowing you access point.

On some Toyota halfshafts on the drivers side, I have had to resort to removing the halfshaft & boot at the joint next to the ******. I then use a vise grip to grab the edge of the joint shaft. I attach a slide hammer (10lb bad ***) and ****** it out.

Some of those bastards are a ***** to get out.:spit:

After I did my daughters Toyota (don't remember which side is a *****, but one of them is) I bought myself a Silver ******* with the halfshaft adaptor.

There was one vehicle we did, that we had the half shaft arrive, before the car did. I found out it had a pin that held it in (wish I remembered what it was). Needed to punch out the pin on that one before popping out with a prybar or a few yanks. Not on a lift, may be a different animal.

Why can't they all be like 4WD chevys. 6 bolts on the end, full then out and it comes off the flange, no fluid leaks, no hassle.

A pry bar usually works but sometimes it's in there so tight and there's no where to pry on without damaging something so I have that slide bar add-on that "54FordPanel" posted. It works great in those situations.

I've considdered buyng the slide hammer adapter, I've never seen this fork style, usually a pry bar does the job but sometimes you simply cant get one in there, and some times after 40 odd years they simply do nto want to come apart

I like that slide hammer attachment, I could have used that on my girlfriends hyundai a couple months ago. Looks like you could fit it where a prybar is too long. I do love that the slidehammer can be so versatile.

I bought that exact tool off the Matco truck a while ago. It works very well on chevy colorados, but there've been several situations where the tool just doesn't fit in the area needed.

The first time I did my Probe (driver side), I pulled it out with just my hands. The next time it was a bear. The story is that the c-clips on the replacements were not the right size. I wound up using a long chisel from the top (had to remove a few things to get access). A chisel on each side would have been better. Might have been able to get it from below if I had a lift. I have heard of guys destroying the transmission by using brute force (think logging chain).

I don't know if this tool would be the right size for most cars or not. I think I would just use a couple of chisels, maybe a pickle fork with an air hammer.

What is the best brand slide hammer to get and what is the best weight for a slide hammer in order to remove a half shaft that is stuck?

I don't want to gouge up the transmission with my pry bar.

I plan to use the tool on honda, acuras, nissans, hyundai, toyota.

Video that shows no room for a prybar:

I bought one, it looked handy, but I havn't used it yet so no idea if it will work. As for a slide hammer, 3 choices I know of, cheapies (hf), OTC, most likly imported now and SO. Proto may offer some too, but I am not up on their puller selection.

Passenger side on the Camry is fun to do without the slide hammer. I just borrowed the slide hammer and Axle attachment from Autozone and it worked wonders. However if you do happen to go this route the attachment needs to be modified (widened) a little bit.

However on other vehicles I've just used prybars.

Have yet to meet one that I can't pop with a pry bar, and I've pulled quite a few. If you can get that tool in there, you can get a bar in just as easily.

I use this tool on the left side of a GM 4T65E. The right side axle can be pried out, but not the left side because there's nothing to pry against on the left side; so this tool is a necessity for the left side. If anybody is interested, I can set you up with all the part numbers and the instructions for the correct way to use this tool.

On my Sunbird, it was a prybar to pull the inner from the transaxle, and a hammer + block of wood for the other side (nothing to pry against) as well as to push the outers free of the hub once the nut was off.

IIRC, my Nissan truck's outer is held in by a C-clip of some sort, inner held in by six bolts.

i have the axle popper is very useful if you work on many different cars which i do. one tap and the axle pops off if you have clear access to the axle. pry bars work good too but u need even pressure. all three tools are needed for any mechanic really
