A couple years ago, I was in an locksmith, getting locks for our work site.

He had a case hardened plate which mounts to the floor of the garage concrete, then has a chain, which wraps around the rear axle. Looked like it would slow a car thief down considerably.

Has anyone here used one?

How about placing alarm contacts on the garage overhead doors?
We use these doors as a primary entrance, so I'm not sure how to set that up.

Typically the B&E artists around here, get a stolen car, and ram it through the garage door to knock it off track, and break in.

Just had a vehicle theft in the neighbourhood overnight, so I am going to accelerate this decision process

A delay can be programmed on any contact and I`ve done it many times for customers. If your worried about the overhead door getting smashed in block the door by parking your DD in front of it.

The problem with a shop is it usually contains all the tools necessary to defeat the security measures. In my garage, if I chained down the cars and trucks, I've then got to find a way to lock up the cutting torch and the air cut-off tools.

Thats true but it would slow them down. And that might be good enough to get someones attention.

Exactly. If a theif wants in my shop, they WILL get in. No stopping them. But it's the attention getting devices, and things I use to slow them down that will prevent a break-in from being devastating.

Why? The chain and/or method of retention in the concrete are the weak links. Good ol' mild steel plate is gonna be just as effective. They're not gonna try to cut the plate when they can cut the chain.

You have to remeber thieves are lazy by nature.

You just want them to realize it isnt worth the trouble ao they should go on down the road.

I always say, Locks just keep honest people honest.

Thier is nothing I / You couldn't steel if I really set my mind to it. ( I have a 2 stroke concrete saw, I could core a hole in damn near any wall out there).

Yeah, I`m not thinking of stopping thieves, I`m thinking about making things difficult and slowing them down.

I like the idea of the chain as opposed to the wheel clamps/locks

what about getting a boot like the city uses? probably much more effective. After all, they may not even see that chain attached to the axle when they take off like bats outta hell out of your garage. They may not get far, but it wont be a good ending by any means.

I have an alarm on my shop but I also know that alarms can easily be defeated. A friend works at a golf course and their shop is completely alarmed at all entrances. Thieves took a piece of the Rpanel off the exterior wall and stole the 60gallon air compressor. Left his box of Snapon tools behind because it wouldn't fit thru the hole.

A smart thief can easily get into anywhere they want but I'm gonna make it as hard as I can to keep the dumb thieves at bay.

What happens if you forget to unhook the chain before going on a drive one day?

A thief wants the easiest target. Making your house LOOK difficult should be enough. Bars on windows, security system sign, security system, random visable BS that makes the job harder.

Of course, if they KNOW what you have, you have the extra steps of being a viable target. The thief will now be bringing tools necessary to getting in. Than means he would cut a hole in the door with a torch, or cut right though a wood sided building and walk in. Lock your box, barricade it in or bolt it to a wall through the back. Make the path out difficult. tempt them with shiny yet crappy tools near the door, and put your prized collection further away.

Also, make sure your insurance is paid up.

Hire a cheap immigrant worker to stand guard with a shotgun i say!
Once my cars are done i'll be looking to at the very least set up an alarm system, and will probably have to bar up the window unfortunately. Heavy core door. Luckily in my street there are often housewives home, and then at night there are always people home to hear an alarm or loud break-in sort of noises.
All we can do is prepare and hope i guess
