Cast Iron Column for Grinder Stand

I am putting together a support stand for a 1 hp 8" Jet Grinder. The tube I have is an old 2 3/4" x 31" long cast iron bench drill press column.

The base and the mounting plate being used are plenty beefy, but I wonder if the cast iron column is up to the task. It is just under 1/4" wall - maybe .235". The completed stand would weigh in the vicinity of 65 lbs., mostly in the base.

Any thoughts?

Would absolutely work. Did you ever see the tube on a Craftsman "Block" grinder base? Your drill press column is an order of magnitude better.

Made me think. We just parted out a big old Jet drill press and the base, column and table are still out there. I don't have an 8" grinder any longer and it seems overkill for the numerous 6". What do I have that could use this? Because the column is on the back of the base, it's not suitable for a vise stand.

First thought is we're an engine shop and are in the process of setting up a balancer department. This requires a vertical belt sander to lighten connecting rods. Might be a good base for that.
