I thought I'd share a little review of this new little gem that I bought two weeks ago at Walmart. I've logged countless hours of grinding/shaping/wire cup wheeling with some fine machines in my time, but never with a 30.00 unit.
I had actually saved a review from Popular Mechanics (it ends up being 3 years old) of the top ten angle grinders for the time and the B and D was then pretty decently rated. It's only gripe was the finicky rocker switch.
Well things have changed in three years ! This paddle switch is very easy to work (with thick gloves on too) and has a very positive on/off engagment. I wasn't pleased with its featherweight screw on handle so I used a 15 year old (nicely built) heavier Dewalt handle and it's a 1000% better.
I ran this thing for nearly an hour straight (changover time for a wire cup wheel,a few discs and cut off wheel included) and for a 6 amp unit it ran quite admirably....it was only mildly warm. It has GUTS for wire wheeling off old paint, and it's pretty good at knocking down tough old 7018 beads.
It was less than 33 dollars out the door at Walmart and I'm pretty sure it has an unlimited 2 year warranty for the home user (paper work isn't handy to.confirm details). It comes with the cut off wheel pictured here. I'm more than impressed.
I wanted a smaller 6 amp version that wouldn't be so aggressive (running at full speed) for doing finesse/detail jobs and was looking for a used unit on CL for weeks. They were either overprised, too beat up, or the seller's and I couldn't conveniently meet.
I decided to try a box store and of the 4 candidates I saw, this B & D had the best quality and balance. I might have gotten lucky (or not as it needs more seat time) but so far I'm extrememly impressed and more than happy with this purchasse.
Regards,
Shawn
