Nothing fancy just some 3/16" hardboard underlayment. I got 2 coats of Kilz on it right now. I am debating on the base coat. Gloss white or a light gray. With white I think you will be able to tell the difference in the new and old too easy. With gray I am thinking it will all blend the same. Any thoughts?

Looks like it's agreed. WHITE. Probably go with a semi gloss. What's a good industrial type gloss white?

Is the hardboard underlayment the same as masonite?

Is that the trick to painting....prime first?

Yeah it's like a masonite. It seems pretty tough one side is smooth the other has a rough texture. Almost like pressed and masonite.
About priming and painting: This garage was nasty, the block was stained and just filthy especially in the bathroom and office area. I thought I was going to have to pressure wash it or clean off the filth somehow which sounded like was gonna be a wet filthy mess. Well I figured i'd try something easier first. I used a broom and knocked down all the dust and dirt off the walls. Proceeded to use Kilz. I was shocked. This stuff just covered up everything (and it's white). There was literally parts of the bottom of the block that were black. I put on a coat of Kilz and then a base coat of white. I will take some pics of the office area. I painted the bottom half gloss black and thinking about doing it in the shop area also. I highly recommend Kilz if your gonna do any painting. It is a primer and a sealer so helps seal everything also.

Just to clarify, I was referring to the masonite. To paint it, should it be primed first?

What thickness should be used over a furring strip grid?

Appreciate the reply.

Yeah I would prime it. I put 2 coats on because the 1st coat I could still see some bleed through. But 1 coat of Kilz and 1 base coat would probably suffice.
What I am using is 3/16" with furring strips 16"oc, and screwed every 16".

Zinsser BIN primer would have covered in one coat. It's white tinted shellac based primer. One of the local fire restoration companies here uses it exclusivly to block char and odor. Quite possibly the best primer on the market for stain and odor blocking abbilities.

This is just my personal opinion but I dont care for Kilz products. I prefere the Zinsser brand as I have had better luck with it that Kilz.

Never tried that product. I'll have to try it in future. Where can you pick it up at?
Well, I didn't buy white paint for ceiling. I bought some grey (flagstone grey) from Lowes. (commercial quality). I am going to go ahead and cover the ceiling with it and run a strip around the garage (about a row or 2 of blocks) about 4 feet up. I figure that will look good, break up some of the all white and I have plenty of lighting in there. I figure it will look good with my grey cabinets from Lowe's. Then in future like do do the flooring with a nice grey epoxy/tile.
I tried to talk the wife into buying me a airless paint sprayer. LOL.

Your local paint stores (Sherwin Williams, Diamond Vogal, etc...) will most likely have it. Not sure if Lowes or Home Depot stock it. If you live in the midwest and there is a Menards close by the stock it. We also stock it at the Sears store that I work at. Ace Hardware might be a good place to check as well. Check them out at http://www.zinsser.com/ They have "Where to Buy" link that might be of some help.
