I thought babbit was just the outer layer. The thin one that you can rub off with a rag.

No idea on the proper way. All my bearings come with the oil galleys. sorry

Babbit bearings in machine tools and early engines are poured in place. Probably a bit before your time. I have seen grooves put in with just the shart end of the scraper. What are you working on?
I'm curious what the 'experts/old timers have to say" I'm old enough to know what your talking about but to young to have poured any.

Did a search and found this

I'm rebuilding an old Brunner air compressor pump. The connecting rod bearings were shot. I poured new bearings and have scraped and scraped and scraped some more, but I'm not having much luck w/ the oil channels.

I have it as well, but technology has come a long way since the information was written. Just wondering if someone had a newer/easier way to do it. thanks

I've got a copy of Vince Gingery's book on Babbitt bearings mentioned above - invaluable for working on old equipment. He recommends just scraping the grooves in with a pointed scraper. Worked for me.

Babbit bearings are still in use today. at least in the ag industry. At my work, we build pto driven irrigation pumps. We use babbit bearings on them. They have a grease channel in them already look like they where either milled or poured that way.

i realize that your situation is different, but just thought that i'd share that they are still utilized.

I'm thinking I will repour the bearings. Molding the oil channels into the bearing is something I've been pondering.

Although not babbit, I have put lubrication grooves in a brass bushing using a dremel with a small ball burr and doing it by hand. Babbit should be easier.
