...Machine again - Got it to bare metal... Primed... Re-insulated, LED's in the bottle racks and getting ready to shoot some Orange for the door and 4" - 6" into the body (same as the old white) - the rest will remain Primed and I will do some pin striping on it - the accent pieces will be shot black :bounce:- the small soda door is yet to be determined (Maybe bare metal and cleared with some antique rose pinstripe accents)...:headscrat

For all the Purest - this is not a collector model though it is old it has little collection value - therefore - I be modifying it for fun~!!:beer::thumbup:

What did you use for insulation? I have a vendo 81 that needs a new compressor. Before I get that replaced I wanted to remove the interior box to clean it up and regalvinize it. I was thinking of upgrading to modern ridged closed cell foam for more R-value and better efficiency. I don’t care about originality; I want it to be cheaper to operate.

It was a cheap but high R# Roll of Insulation from Lowes... I pulled the old insulation out that looks like matted sheeps wool that turned to dust when I touched it... Anyway I washed it down - fan dried it overnight - taped the new stuff in - put the box back in and had to stand in it... it slowly eased down... it was that tight and I have NO IDEA why the insulation didn't smash down but it didn't - stayed in place and now its as tight as a drum...

USMC - Nice little project. Will it stay in the garage or is it going inside to a family room or something? Orange and primer gray? I'm surprised its not Harley colors: Orange and black.

May I be rude and ask if this is a Craigslist or an eBay find, and the cost? I'd love to have one of the old horizontal soda machines like there used to be in the liquor store my Dad took me into when I was a little kid. I'm 55 now so that was a loong time ago. Probably about 1960ish.

Dan... Ha ha... I wouldn't know rude if it was chewing my arm off so don't worry about that - I found it on Craigslist for $150 and knew the guy had to move the next day so I offered $75 and he jumped on it... So Yahooooo for me~!! The Face of the Machine will be Orange and Black with the 80% of the back being Primer... I will do some Military Stenciling with "Harley Davidson", "1903" and maybe "Milwaukee, WI" or something - you know like the ole Crate Stamp look crossing over on occasion onto the Orange... Then I'll do some pinstriping and maybe some Antique Rose around the Bottom. I just get my wheels turning...

Cool story! I remember when I was a little bity USMCBay my Mom and Dad were butting heads and my Mom yelled "...and don't leave and take the kids to the bar~!!!!" So after slamming the door on her way out - Dad loaded us up and we went to the bar! I remember being enamored over the fact that Dogs could play pool according to the Velvet Painting~!!! Ha ha... they grew out of it Thank God.

Here's what I did tonight... (the splatter to the right is going to be a backdrop for some Red and Maroon Antique Rose Pinstriping... see another guys example - I'm going to try it)

Thanks for the info. I went on CL right after seeing your thread and the only coke machines for sale were the modern ones (ugh!), the cheapest like $400. There WAS a very cool white 7Up machine w/the side glass door but the guy wanted $1000!

That liquor store my Dad used to take me to? I think it actually had an RC Cola machine - I'm seeing in my (child's) mind's eye and was filled with every brand of soda in icy water with chunks of ice floating in it. THere was a little wooden stool for kids like me and it had YooHoo, the old Crush glass bottles that were sort of knurled looking on the top, Bubble-Up, Delaware Punch, I could never decide which I wanted. I also remember the owner of this liquor store kept a Minah (sp?) bird on a huge stand behind the front counter. You could never do that today; which I suppose is as it ought to be, but it made quite an impression on me as a little kid.

It's funny how so many memories come rushing back from something as minor as an old soda machine. Looking forward to seeing how yours comes out.

Ha ha... Great memories Huh? I remember seeing Minah birds in the feed store when I was a kid... Old wood floors and Iced Cokes there too I remember... I've got Cokes, Dr Pepper, Orange and Grape Crush, and IBC Rootbeer and Cream Soda waiting in my Garage right now for the completion of the Coke Machine... When I first got it the kids LOVED it... I need to stay focused on finishing it.

Good stuff my friend~!

I have an old Vendo 63 in my garage. I know it chews through the juice but the fact that this thing still runs after more than 50 years in service impresses me. I cleaned up the interior, sandblasted everything but the top, back and sides and refinished every individual piece. One of these days I'm going to roll it out into the driveway and have at it with a DA and some 80 grit, followed by a little bondo, sanding, polyester primer, blocking and a couple coats of RustOleum Sunrise red.

THREE things: Do it soon...Post pictures....Do it in it's own thread!

Seriously, for guys like us I can see this soda machine restoration/customization thing catching on. I know I am passively in the hunt for one now that USMCBay's project has me thinking of my long departed Dad.

A smaller horizontal one with the double top doors....and ok, MAYBE a Minah bird too! (Kidding, I'm KIDDING:bounce:)

Wow... in some small way I am amazed and hugely honored that a "thread" could make someone move to action for a Father/Son memory... That's awesome! I love the Horizontal Chests - we eat at a Restaurant on occasion that has one and I eyeball it all the time. And the Minah Bird is Great American Heritage Comedy... Real right thinking Men wouldn't be offended - no matter our Heritage!:beer:
