Yikes, and I thought $150 lights were excessively expensive! I'm sure that this is more for life or death situations than home DIY type work.

WOW. I'm a flashlight junkie, but that's taking it a bit too far... I thought I was being insane when I bought a couple of Fenix lights (https://www.fenix-store.com/)... Both my wife and I carry L0Ds on the keychain and I have a P3D in the toolbox. Both highly recommended. Tons of (adjustable) power in tiny packages...

Fenix is also the most recent I have been looking at, but I still use a NextGen I picked up on clearance at Circuit City for $7.

I am NOT impressed with the Snapon flashlights as sold by Costco at least. Plenty of light at a distance etc., but poor beam pattern for auto work with a big "hole" in the middle of the beam.

Ah, Billymade beat me to it! Another strong vote for Surefire, and another awesome brand is Streamlight (they are widely used by law enforcement). I have a surefire E2E elite - very small- but extremely rugged and bright for its size. I also have a Streamlight Ultra Stinger - this is one bad mofo - same as many police carry - I can blind somebody with it temporarily - if I had to:lol_hitti

Hint- amazon has a decent selection of streamlight, sometimes at great prices

Aha, there are other flashlight junkies here! Add me to the list, also a big Fenix fan. Your P3D is one of the best 'lights out there for the money. If a handheld doesn't put out at least 200 lumens, why bother carrying it? ("Blinding" is usually figured around 80 lumens, so "blinding" lights are way too dim for most Fenix owners.)

The other thing that EVERY mechanic / shop dude should own is a Zebra headlamp. Simply an amazingly useful light, plus gets rave reviews from the afi's. I own a couple H50 Q5s, but contractors keep stealing/begging them from me (for good reason!)

Regarding upscale lights, if you are interested, check out candlepowerforums.com, they have custom modders who turn MagLites into light cannons that can set fire to paper several inches from the lens.

I have seen Fenix lights around, but am hesitant since they're imported.

I'd rather stick with Maglite, Streamlight, & Surefire, for the time being at least.

Yep, I understand completely. Surefire is a great USA light. I also own a Streamlight UV light, very solid. And like everyone else, own several Maglights (modified with modern emitters, however).

My "rule" is that I will buy foreign IF they are the innovation leaders. The Chinese virtually own the field of advanced LED emitters. I read (correct me if I'm wrong) that Surefire uses Chinese emitters for their very bright LED lights.

I edc the Elektrolumens EDC-MCE
http://www.elektrolumens.com/

Makes my Streamlight Stinger LED seem like an incandescent Maglite.
The Streamlight is my favorite work on the car flashlight though for its still awesome brightness, long battery life, durability and ease of charging.

I sure am out of touch, seems like a lot of money for one flashlight. Does it do something special (rechargeable, long lasting, will not break if dropped etc.) ?

They bought those at work and they are bright as ****. Makes my $100 Sure Fire look like a $0.99 Walmart cheapy!

And yes... talk about waste of .gov money on those!
I go into work last night and they bought 12 SAD lights at $325 EACH!

The ceiling is about to fall down in the office, whole place looks like ****. We have to use tape to clean the carpet because the vacuum is broken. Can't afford soap for the bathroom, YET... they can afford $4000 in lights we don't need or want.:mad::mad::mad:

How about a multi-function flashlight: the TK Monster -- serves as both light and pipe bomb:

This is more my style of flashlight:

430 for the light, and another 90 for a replacement bulb- ouch. wonder how they take to being dropped from a rack say 10 feet.

Sorta OT...but it strikes me that this would be an AWESOME project for my metal lathe.

Does anyone have a lead on a kit that would include the LEDs and reflector assembly?
