Bag-in-a-box motor oil packaging coming

From one of the packaging industry newsletters I get in my real life, an announcement of a new-old innovation in motor oil packaging. The well-known bag-in-box system.

From what the major oil change companies are saying up here vehicles are going to start being equipped with a cartridge that contains the oil and you just replace the cartridge. They are all scrambling to install equipment to do other types of work like tire changes because they feel their oil change business is going to drop substantially.

It's been here for some time now. I have Pennzoil and Kendall in stock, well had Pennzoil until their base stock plants went out several months back. Virtually nothing with the pure base synthetic stock is available from them now. The common size for these are 24 quart capacity, the taps hold up well and don't drip other than just after use. Have not had problems with any leakers. The boxes for these are typically a double wall unit with extra reinforcement in the corners.

The trouble with buying bulk is the explosion for manufacturer specific oils. The days of covering all the vehicles you see with three oils are long over. Between the GM Dexos spec oils, oils that meet BMW LL01 and LL04 specs, toss in the various Chrysler specs and having all of these in bulk containers becomes a challenge. The nice thing about the boxes are the product name, viscosity and specs are visible on the box, a customer knows what they are getting.

I would like this in a 5 gallon jug that I could sit on my shelf. I hate the 5 quart jugs as they are too awkward to pour. The 1 quarts makes too much waste and impossible to refill with old oil. To do that. My used oil all goes in large 5 gallon wide mouth jugs anyways.

I don't see the advantage except maybe more compact for shipping... Before the plastic bottles I'm sure could be recycled... Now you have the plastic bag & nozzle, then a cardboard box... and still have to figure some way to get your used oil to a place to recycle it...

If the wine is any indicator, you will have to remove the bag and hang it up somehow after clipping off a corner to empty completely.

I get 6 to oz. from an "empty" wine bag this way.

I wonder if they ran his idea past the recycling industry.
I just read an article that they hate plastic bags.

I always wanted to use the castrol gtx bagged box oil instead of the multiple jugs but comparing prices it ends up coming to $25 per gallon versus the $18 I pay for a gallon jug anyways.

Going to be a fiasco here in Ca. Manufacturers probably think it's great from a shipping / packaging perspective, maximum cubic in shipping. Do It Yourselfers will have to use those 4-5gal drain pan jugs to properly dispose of the oil since you can't put it back in the jug it came from. So then I have to hassle with pouring out my 'keeper' jug instead of just offloading the original packaging jug.
And neither the recyclers or trash contractor are going to take that contraption.

Going to be like those mercury-containing CFLs, which there STILL isn't a fully legal way to dispose of. Everybody just throws them in the trash, after all the baloney for foist them on us, mandate them, pass laws about their being toxic waste.

Like anything, its all about making more profits by by reducing costs. I'm sure a plastic bag and carton are way cheaper than a 5l/quart plastic container, but of course if you think we will see the savings, not likely. Like the milk in a bag here in Ontario.

It's not clear to me how big these containers are -- or do they come in different sizes? Will they be available to the "home gamer"?

It looks like these are intended for the "perfeshunal" market, but honestly I'd love to be able to buy in bulk for my home shop if it saves a few pfennigs here and there.

As far as product left in the bag, I'd say it's definitely going to be a LOT less than with bottles. Anyone who's worked in a kitchen is familiar with milk, oil, syrup, ketchup, etc. packaged in bags -- they're very efficient in terms of the amount of usable product dispensed.

Looks like these come in 6 gallon containers. Sounds perfect for home use, honestly. My van takes 6.4 quarts at every oil change, so a box would almost cover four oil changes.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like these are widely available to consumers yet. I found some Castrol in "Enviro Pack" packaging on Amazon, but the pricing works out about the same or more than buying in quart bottles.

I don't see why they couldn't simply re-engineer the shape of the container as-is... Heck, if Costco & Sam's Club can get vendors to do that and maximize quantity on a pallet, you would think oil would be a no-brainier...

They are great for getting the cost down from 6/1 qt cases. They are usually 10% cheaper.
We have a supplier that is going to start selling us synthetic ATF in a 275 gallon "tote" that is constructed the same way.
