I have a Swedish friend, tool enthusiast and co-worker. He is visiting Sweden shortly and I asked him to buy me a Swedish ratchet and basic socket set, just for grins. He personally owns and uses Snap-On but says Bahco is very high quality. I will probably ended up giving the set to a Volvo or Saab fanatic, but want to see what kind of tools our Viking brothers use. I'll post pictures when they arrive. I hope I don't develop a new sickness for ratchets of the world. I am susceptible to odd metal fetishes.

I just bought a Bahco 3/8" ratchet. It is made in Spain. Very nice and smooth.

Have him buy you some Mora knives instead. Or check the flea markets for some vintage stuff that WAS made in Sweden..

Old Bahco is lovely , the adjustable wrenches very well made with a tiny but very annoying quirk, the thumbwheel turns **** about to every other wrench I've used , took me ages to work that out. ( try plumbing with two wrenches ,one thumbwheel clockwise to adjust smaller the other clockwise to open the jaws ! )
The new stuff is ok , I have a couple of the socket sets , all good so far apart from crappy plastic cases , it looks very Chinese though , dunno if I would bother bringing that sort of stuff a very long way home.

Hi Flivver,
as stated by others, Bahco is now a part of SNA Europe. The only current production in Sweden is Saw blades (Former Sandvik Saw)(but tell your friend to check the coo, since some saws are made in Minsk (Russia) or China), Forest tools (now named Edsbyn Industrial, a branch offered for sale, since SNA doesn´t see forest equipment as their core business), and some Lindström pliers. Some 10 years ago, Bahco employed 6.000 people in Sweden. The number is now appr. 600.
If you search the "tools from the old world" thread, you´ll find loads of information on Bahco tools.
As Duarte says, real value for the buck? Buy some Mora knives. So-so finish, but fantastic steel. A good mora knife will be, say 10-15$ in a toolshop, but can be found for half the price in a farmshop! And yes, old Bahco tools can be found at most fleamarkets, "loppis" in swedish. If you drive around in the swedish countryside in the summer, these pops up in every small town, and in many private houses and farms.

And for the question "what kind of tools our Viking brothers use"? Most professionals use german made tools like Hazet, Gedore, Stahlwille, Knipex etc, but also lots of asian tools such as Teng Tools or Kamasa (both designed in Sweden, made in Taiwan or Japan). And - if they are old enough in the trade - old nordic made tools like Bahco, DSI, Thors hammare, Hultafors. :)

I have been using Bahco adjustable wrenches at work for years and years and I love them. Love my Bahco hacksaw as well. I was disappointed they moved manufacturing out of Sweden and went to Snap-on for a new adjustable. Looks familiar (this was bought a number of years ago, don't know status today, but assume these are no more, either).
