Picked up a 1021w grinder on auction. Comes with a stand, light/spark guard, end guards. It's a 1 1/2 hp 3 phase setup. If have to run it off a vfd and it looks like I'd have to run a 220 line to use. Only have about 40 bucks in it now. What would this thing be worth? Only thing missing I think is the glass shields from the spark guards. I'll upload pictures later.

Value is very area/market dependent, but 3 ph does not help as the average joe ain't going to spring for a VFD as well...

A one new would cost around $1000. I'm not sure on the used value, but since you only paid $40 YOU ****! Well... assuming it runs ok. Otherwise you can prop the door open with it.

it looks like you also have the Baldor cast iron stand with your grinder. i'm sure you have a nice investment even if it doesn't run because the parts are worth a lot more than you paid for it.
if it were mine I'd buy a VFD, and see if it ran or take it to a shop that has a 3 phase to plug it in if available. if it does then i would clean it up and it wouldn't leave my shop until it went to my son's house when i'm long gone from this world.
are they 8 inch or maybe 10 inch wheels? can you get a close up of the badge after you clean it off?

The lighted eye shields and stand alone go for a lot of money on Ebay. I've never looked but I'm sure the wheel guards would be worth a lot since they've often missing.
Running it off of a VFD is no big deal and actually considered a benefit to some. If you read wood turning forums you'll find there is a faction of posters that prefer to find older three phase grinders so they can have variable speed sharpening for all of their chisels, etc.
If you want to get lost in the archives and possibly end up with more questions than answers, you can read about the possibility of running it on a 120V input VFD and getting about 1HP output out of the stock 1.5 HP motor.
Whether it will work or not is not the confusing part. Whether it's good, bad or indifferent for the motor is where it got confusing to me.

I'm not scared to run it off a VFD. I have a VFD on my bridgeport. (I wish I would have gotten the 110V VFD for the Mill now instead of the 220 VFD.) It's a JNEV model, and I'd probably go with the same model if I keep the Baldor.
I'm 90% sure it will run just fine. It came from a semi-local power company. The tag says it runs, but was taken out of service because the plastic is missing from the shields.
I would assume these wheels will last forever at normal shop/farm use? They both have slight crevices in the middle, one has a deeper crevice and some aluminum built up on it. I looked at replacements but they run about $60 without doing too much research to find a better deal.
After doing some more searching it seems like the lighted shields could be worth 100-150 and same for the stand.
Major suckage in this one.

you don't need to buy new wheels and just a wheel dressing tool to true up the wheels. of course you'll need to get it running to do that.
yes the lighted shields are not cheap and the stand is also not a cheap add on. you really shouldn't sell that stand if you are keeping the grinder because those are the 3 phase type stands with some of your grinder's wiring in it. your choice though.

6"x6" 1/4" thick impact-resistant polycarbonate sheets are about $5 from mcmaster.
These should be easy to hacksaw cut and file to fit whatever size the shields need.
