Does anyone have experience with the 1022W?

It's a 1hp, single phase, 1800 RPM, 10" grinder. I noticed the amp draw seems sort of low at 5.4/2.7A.

I think the older version of this model has a higher amp draw (9.4A on 115V).

Thanks,

Greg

745 watts is 1hp
5.4A x 120V = 648 watts / 745 = .87hp
2.7A x 240V = 648 watts / 745 = .87 hp
Maybe over rating it a bit but its deff not 1/4 hp. And alot closer to 1hp.

The old one you claim thats 9.4A
9.4 x 120 = 1128 / 745 = 1.5hp

I'm not 100% confident in that figure, I found it online so I'm taking it with a grain of salt.

Anyways, do you guys think this is a decent grinder?

Guy is asking $500 OBO including what I think is an original stand. It has the basic shields not the nice heavy duty lighted ones. Looks to be in nice shape.

That's about as good as bench grinders get. New without base is around $1100 so the price is not out of line if it is in good condition. I'm cheap though and I would be looking for an old Wissota for a lot less.

Weird...literally the last company I'd expect to inflate HP #s. Very few electrical things are 100% efficient, and even if that were the case here, it's still less than 1HP. Probably a pretty nice grinder though. Can you try before you buy? Do you really need a 10" grinder? $500 is a decent chunk of dough - with that budget you can probably get something new and/or more powerful (i.e. Jet industrial [gray], etc.).

You're assuming 100% efficiency which ain't even close for a small single phase motor. 0.87 x 0.67 is gonna be in the ballpark so just north of 1/2HP.

It's also fishy that they're claiming 1,800 rpm which ain't happening with a conventional motor. I guess it's possible it might be ECM or inverter either of which would boost efficiency some. Maybe boost it into the 3/4HP range best case.

Unless they're doing it differently, full load amp rating is typically what's listed for a motor in product specifications. For a 1hp motor at 120vac that would be 16 amps, for a 1/4hp motor that would be 5.8 amps.

I agree that efficiency needs to be included in the voltage x amps calculations, if that's how they are listing it.

I was surprised. I think Baldor is highly regarded as a USA made overbuilt product. My assumption would have been they state 1 hp and you likely get 1.1 hp (or something like that).

I really wanted a solid built to last USA model - even though it's probably overkill for what I need.

10inch grinder doesn't take off more material then an 8inch.

if i was gonna pay 500$ for a grinder id get one of them with a belt grinder setup for material removal.

instead i am building a 2x72 belt grinder instead of using a 8-12inch hard wheel grinder.

By law a 4 pole 3/4 to 1 hp motor must be at least 82.6% efficient. Four pole single phase motors run at 1750 to 1800 rpm as built. 648 watts x 82.6% = .715 hp. My guess is that this unit is capacitor run which can increase power output on a temporary basis. Still, not a true one hp.

Maybe its got efficiency already factored in. I tested my .5hp in the shop, no load only wire wheel, and grinding disc
Data plate says 3.4A for .5hp @ 115v.
Clamp meter is 2.5A no load, 3.4 under what i wouod consider a light load
5-7A under heavy load, and can still rotate no problem.
3 4A is .52hp,

Edit. Oh its also a baldor.

I have an old 1022W. It is a beast and does claim 1800 rpm. I can't access the tag right now to check the draw. I paid $60 at a school auction 20 years ago. It came with one lighted guard and both rests.

+1
In fact, the surface speed on a 8-inch grinder is typically far greater than a 10-inch. Most 8-inch run at 3450 rpm, while every 10-inch I've seen is half that. But a slow very coarse wheel can remove metal pretty damn fast.....

Actually, a coarse wheel running at low speed will catch and remove material faster than one running at higher surface speed up to a point. It will also do a lot less heating as each grain removes a larger chip.

I bought this Baldor 1022W from a farmer about 8 years ago. I paid $300 for it and have been very satisfied with the purchase. It has plenty of power for anything I have used it for. Here are some pics.
