Background:
I scored a Baldor 1216W 12" 3HP grinder with base for $150! Really turning out nice so far. Almost all the parts were sandblasted or cleaned with a heated ultrasonic cleaner, and most of them are now hand painted using oil based enamel.
Electrical Mods:
To power the motor, I'm using a KB KBAC-29 1P (3HP single phase version). This gives me speed control and phase conversion in one sealed NEMA 4x enclosure. I haven't tried 2x speed yet, but can go from 0-100 percent very smoothly on the 1x jumper setting.
For the 110V lighted eye shields (weren't cheap), I want to add a current transformer to convert from 220V, otherwise I have to run 3 different cords to the grinder. Outlet is wired as shown, and the cables will be connected to a 250VA current transformer using 2A fuses (have this coming in the mail soon). I'm going to install the transformer in the empty space below, inside the motor's cradle.
Questions:
I'm also thinking about welding a wheeled base up that the stand will sit into. Has anyone done such a thing with a heavy grinder like this (that's normally bolted to the floor)?
Also, where's the best place to buy 12" grinding wheels?
