So I made a little road trip on Saturday, and hauled home heavy-duty Baldor.

This 1217W was in an old shop of a landscaping business, but, they said it was there when they moved in so they didn't use it or know much about what the previous owner had used it for.
On the left-hand side, they had a box built to utilize it for a belt driven purpose of some sort. I need to investigate further to see what exactly it was turning at the other end. Maybe some of you will recognize the set-up or have some good guesses as to what it was used for.
I plan to start cleaning and replacing missing parts, and eventually restore it like it deserves.

Maybe, but why such a long way to the pulley, requiring the long belt and the long plywood box?

Looks like there is a tensioner lever at the end of the tapered chute. I would assume you just need a rubber contact wheel for the arbor and you will have a belt grinder.

Pedestal had been there a long time and I’m a little surprised how good of shape it is in.

I don't see it having any relationship to the wooden box. I was just referring to what looks like a belt sander attachment. I must have misinterpreted your question.

I'm guessing a home made belt sander attachment . the bottom end has the idler wheel and the top ( grinder) wheel is the drive wheel
was the previous tenant a landscaper too? it might have been for blade sharpening

I’m just confused by it…. I’m not seeing how or why they would have had a belt running all the way to the back of that box.

Well, thanks guys! I think you're right with the belt sander, especially when looking at the idler wheel. I didn't realize the advantages of running a long belt. Now on to fixing up some of the wiring, and trying to find a replacement left side guard cover.

This contact wheel would be ok. It is 10" diameter, so it runs a tad slow with a 1750 motor, but should be fine for most tasks.

Thank you Sir, I'll take a look at that.
