Baldor 1217W pedestal grinder.

Picked this up today. It's a massive grinder that takes 12" x 2" wheels. Single phase, 2HP. Runs on 115 or 230. It came out of a local technical college who sold it to the guy I bought it from. It's not wired but the college told the guy it was running fine.

Unsure what I'm going to do with it but for $100 I couldn't pass it up. I have a 10" wire wheel that I'd like to run in it if it will fit on the arbor.

No eye shields.

Can anyone tell about how old it is by the badge style or serial number (768) or the shape of the base?

There is a number cast on top of the stand. Looks to read 3E-1276.

I don't know how to date Bladors but I know enough about them that for a 2hp WITH a stand I have to tell you.

Voi: the stand is worth what you paid for it and if the Baldor runs you got a bonus. do you have 3 phase power or are you planning on buying a VFD? i'm not sure how old it is, but judging from the patina and the look i'd say 70's or early 80's and that's only a guess.

i can recommend buying a pair of lighted baldor shields if you can find a used pair. i have some that i took off a baldor i sold a few years ago. i'm planning on using them for my 1/2 hp baldor because they are awesome.

nice score and keep us posted if you can get it up and running. also check the wheels for cracks before you fire it up and also stand to the side in case a wheel explodes.

Wow, that is score of lifetime . . . . what you call HEAVY METAL !!!

Likely you could use for lifetime, abuse to point that motor burned up, accidentally knock over stand and run over with 18 wheeler breaking the pedestal . . . . . AND . . . . still sell the copper from motor for over $100 !!!

So, restore that beast to it's original condition & use for lifetime ; then put in your will to have son keep for his lifetime !!!

CNG: sorry i missed that it has been rewired to single phase. i was looking at the 2 HP and the switch which screams 3 phase. i'm guessing it will run best on a 3 phase or VFD though.

for a Benjamin you did good Voi if you can get it fired up. again a little warning with these big old grinders that have old stones on them. BEE CAREFUL!!!!

Like CNG said, it's 115/230 single phase. I was shocked to see a grinder that could be run on 115 pushing that size of wheel.

I have another 10" grinder, a 1HP three phase Walker Turner, that I had planned to run on a VFD. But all of my 20 amp circuits are GFI protected so it sits unused.

I also have a 7" Baldor with lighted eye shields but the wheels are getting run down and I've been trying to hold off as long as possible buying wheels for it.

This monster grinder solves some problems for me, especially if the 10" wire wheel I have fits on the arbor, which I think 1 1/4". I'll get able to get by for a while until we do our addition and run a subpanel and more juice to my shop.

I love my little 7" Baldor but have been suffering from paralysis by analysis deciding on what to order for it. Heck, if I get my subpanel in and transfer the eye shields over to this new beast it may end up sitting in a cabinet. Never thought I'd say that.

I don't think it's been re-wired? From what I can tell of this model it's always single phase. Think I found a post on Practical Machinist saying it's the largest single phase grinder Baldor has ever made.

And yes, I'll be very careful. Went to a friend's house as a kid and remember being fascinated by his dad's shop. Asked about the bench grinder and my friend turned it on and the wheel on the left side broke into pieces and went bouncing around the shop. I was eight or nine. Left quite the impression. Fortunately that impression was figurative and not literal.

Voi: sounds like you have a plan and i'm jealous. one thought is since you are full up in the grinder category is that you might sell the 7 inch Baldor since they are in high demand. it's a great grinder as you know, but it sounds like you already have enough wheels so i'm betting a small shop or a guy that needs one would love to own it.

also it will help pay for the new wheels and other supplies to keep your other grinders running smoothly.

I have a developing plan. I may need to make a separate thread. I actually have a fourth grinder that I visualize being a buffer.

Selling the 7" Baldor would be tough.
