Baldor 500 wire wheel question

Ok I’m new to the bench grinder game. Did a little research before I purchased one of my first Baldor bench grinders. It’s a tool sharpener but is 1/2 hp motor and great shape. I’m in process of cleaning up and painting before I start using it. My question is what do I need to put wire wheels on this? Or would I be better to use this one and my coarse and fine grinding stones and use my other Baldor 7307 for my wire wheels? My goal is one with corse and fine wire wheels and other with stones. I couldn’t find much out about the 500. I got the 500 for $70 and the 7307 for $150. Thoughts?

Man! I have looked high and low for a 500! That’s a lathe tool grinder and should have cup wheels. You could easy sell that one to get a really perfect one for normal grinding and wire wheel duty. Nice find!!!

Welcome to the forum! I just noticed this being your first post which left me green with envy.

Rick is right. If that Baldor 500 is complete and in working condition you could sell it easily for 5X what you paid, or more, and get something much better suited for wire wheel and general grinding use.

And, more importantly, a tool grinder like that isn't well suited for using with wire wheels. As a general purpose grinder, the cup wheels it uses are too expensive to use for general grinding use. So, unless you have a lathe, or plan to buy one, that grinder would be one of those good deals that remains of little use.

Leave the wire wheels on a more basic bench grinder. Your 500 sounds like a great machine at a steal of a price.

Can you get different arbor spacers for the wheels? That’s my thing is the spacer or wheel mount for the 500 is a big disc because it supposed to bolt the cup wheels on. The other Baldor the 7307 has couple nice grinding wheels on it currently.

oc,
I just looked at a picture of the 500 and I have to agree with the others. That is really not made for general grinding / wire wheeling etc. It would be a shame to waste it on that type of work. Also not sure what you would need as far as adapters go. You can probably sell it and get a top notch new grinder and have plenty left over :)

You are trying to convert something for which it was not intended. If you succeed, you will end up with something that doesn't work as well as a more basic unit. The best option for a wire wheel is a burrking 600 or 800, as you get full access to the wheel. A standard bench grinder pales in comparison and what you are trying to do is far behind that.

Put a wire wheel on your 7307, but strip the entire guard off that side.

Kinda, sorta, not really. The market for them is rather limited compared to a standard bench grinder. Majority of those that are looking for one, know that.

Thanks guys for the input. Looks like I’ll sell the 500. I’d make someone a good deal if anyone in interested. I can send pics. Is missing couple parts but just got done painting it and giving it a good cleaning.
