Re: Baldor 612

Not a good price at all. This would be a lower end Baldor, while still good, it has the lower end eye shields, stamped steel tool rests, as opposed to the higher end forged ones.

The MSRP on the CURRENT model equivalent is $326.

http://www.baldor.com/catalog/602E

And more realistically, it sells for about $260.

I would maybe pay $100 for it.

$250 is ridiculous.

That price is way too high. I have one in like new condition that I would sell you for much less.

Aside from the price, 1/3 hp is not enough, you need 1/2hp or above, so it is really low end. Keep looking, for the older models.

1/3HP Baldor has plenty of power for a 6" grinder. This isn't a HF unit where the power spec has been liberally bloated.

"1/3HP Baldor has plenty of power for a 6" grinder."
If it were the older 1/3hp 612 I would agree, not bloated like "Sears Hp", but Baldor has lowered amperage per fractional Hp level considerably, like by 50% (like everyone else) .
Basically, get the older Baldor units and you get twice the value.

Was offered a red 612r in like new condition for $150.00. Waiting to see pics. Figured its better than buying from the big box stores.

ALL: 1/3 Baldor will be hard to slow down and might last a lifetime at a guys home garage or shop. they were meant to run 24/7 for commercial use.

that said I think you can buy a new 1/3 HP for $250 because I can buy one for $180 on Craigslist today here that is just missing the tool rests and shields that is brand new.

Referring to it as "low end" is erroneous. It would better be described as "lighter duty".

Agreed. Mine BLOWS the princess auto (canadian HF) 6" completely out of the water for power and smoothness.

LD: Baldor still makes new grinders so my answer would probably be yes, but since you are in Canada and on an island it might take a boatload of greenbacks to ship some to you. if you want to make a trip down to Seattle I might consider selling you my lighted shields that I was going to put on my 1/2 HP Baldor when I rehab it or my 3/4 HP Dayton. I like trades too so PM with your email if you might want pictures and options.

it's hard to beat a Baldor for durability and quality.
