Two of those flanges were way off, by the way. :) ("Way" is relative, of course. :) ) They should run pretty true now, just keep in mind that while they're concentric, that doesn't necessarily mean they're balanced.

The one has a pretty good groove in one side- it shouldn't be a huge problem, but just keep in mind if you get a little persistent vibration you can't dial away, it may be something to look at.

The cad-plated right-hand nut, by the way, was damn near perfect. It only took a very light skim. The factory left-hand nut, though, as pretty wonky. It just happens sometimes.

Sorry about the wait, though, it's been a busy couple of weeks. :D

Doc.

It's all good Doc. I slapped them on today and spun her up, almost damn near vibration free!! You did an excellent job, and it is night and day from where it was.

Can I ask who the member is making those Baldor reproduction badges? I have two Baldors that could use a new badge.

kunkernator ask me to chime in his thread regarding the badges I reproduce. I'm making two for him, one blank (photo posted in this thread), other is with the specs printed on it. That one still waiting for it to arrive from the printers.

I have two thread regarding the process, work and reproduction of this Baldor badge among other styles and models. I try and keep them up to date with the latest badge reproductions and techniques. Once there, please email me or post your comments there. Thank you-David

The one on GJ is missing a few photo links:

OWWM thread is more up to date than GJ one above:

Thanks David! Hopefully you get a bit of business. It seems like these Baldor badges will be very popular.

Sorry for the long wait guys. I got the grinder all put together. Two brand new 36 and 60 grit wheels on it. Everything is all mounted up. I sandblaster the stand that i got it on, and repainted it.

That's a really nice grinder, good job. You could probably get the tool rest from Baldor, wouldn't be very hard to just make some out of angle.

I am thinking about the angle iron, because the new tool rests and mounts end up being about $120 for both sets. Cheapest i could find.

Check with GJer CalsXS2, he's made replacement tool rests for CM Block grinders.

I have seen his work. I will shoot him a PM.

KUNK: I was going to say if you PM CALXS too, but Tourqueman2002 (DOC) already mentioned it. or like Twertsy says you can probably order a new pair from Baldor.

since you started this with I think a FREE or very inexpensive Baldor if memory serves me and ended up with a like new one maybe you can pick up a donor Baldor for your rests. also since you are maybe turning this into one of the nicest Baldor grinder restorations you might keep your eyes open for some Baldor lighted shields which are really nice to have. of course if you have to buy new ones I think they are about $400 a pair, but can't recall exactly the pricing.

if you were closer i'd hand you a piece of 4 x 4 inch 1/2 inch thick angle iron to make some rests, but the piece is too long and too heavy to ship cheaply. my horizontal bandsaw is in pieces so I don't have any way to cut it, but if that changes i'll let you know if you haven't found another option.

looking good sir and WELL DONE

This has been a very informative thread for me. I'm going to be tearing into my Baldor, it's got some "crinkling" sounds under power without the wheels on, which I hope in this case means bad bearings and not something going south in the motor itself. If so, then I'll proceed with bearing & felt replacement, wheel nut and washer machining, cleanup and painting. If it's something else, well, I'll be here at GJ asking questions...

I am starting the rebuild of a Baldor 8107W and I found this thread. I actually posted in another thread accidentally, meaning to post in this one. Anyway I got the Baldor for $15. It runs but makes bearing sounding noises. I began the teardown a few minutes ago and found a couple spacers on the right side that don't look factory. I also have a crack in my right side cast iron (with exhaust) inner wheel cover, and the left side outer cover is missing. Mine did have the felt washers, and the wavy washers, 1 on each side. Someone put new grease in there and there are reference marks punched into the case so I know it has been apart. The guy I got it from said he took it to a motor shop and they told him they couldn't fix it, not sure why though. I will soon find out what it looks like inside.

PS mine is dual voltage, is that the case with all of them?

PSS notice the guy I bought it from paid $175 in it's present condition. After the motor shop told him it couldn't be fixed he assumed it was good for parts only and sold it to me for $15. I am hoping to prove them wrong.

I tore it down and the bearings appear to be recent, and in good shape. I put it back together and started it, but there is still noise and it draws 40 amps while running. Running it for about 5 seconds the cord heats up quick. I am not sure what to think, maybe it was ran with bad bearings too long and overheated the windings. That would explain why the motor shop couldn't fix it.

The felt measures less than 1/4", so i did round up on it. I miss spoke, the bearings are loose in the BORE, not on the shaft. Can anyone confirm if this is the case for Baldor grinders standard? And regardless, i plan on using Loctite green retaining compound. I think it will work fine.

Yup, Loctite 609 (green) should do the trick. It is supposed to be able to fill up to a .005 gap.I have used it a few times when the outter race was a loose fit.

Alright guys, it has been quite a while since i posted an update. Since then, i sent my wheel flanges and nuts to a machinist that is a member here, got them back yesterday, and they look beautiful!

Coincidentally, ANOTHER member is making reproduction Baldor badges for his grinder, so i asked if he could make one for me. He just got done producing them today.

I will slap the grinder together today, and see how she looks. I am making the new tool rests out of angle iron, but i have not decided what to do about the tool rest supports yet.

Which member was making the replacement nameplates? I am interested in replacing the one on my 8" buffer. Thank you
