I’m looking to pick up this Baldor 8” Grinder tomorrow. This appears to be very vintage. Any info would be appreciated. Were these older Baldors worthy? Anything to watch out for? Tag appears to have Model 8250, however, I can’t seem to find anything online about this model.

Thanks in advance!

That’s gonna be great after you clean it up.
I can’t believe how many old grinders I see where somebody in the past has removed the guard on the grinding stone. Wire wheel..yes. Buffing wheel…yes. Grinding stone...NO!

Look up some of the truly gruesome injuries caused by wheels exploding.

Baldor never made junk. I have owned my 825oW for 40 years. KEEP THE GUARDS ON. The guard saved me from injury. The guard contained the flying shrapnel.
Toss the stones out and buy new quality ones. This is not a place or time to get cheap.

Any idea on where you would find new guards for this grinder?

Ebay and a lot of patience. Luckily you have one side to see what they look like.
I would put a soft wire brush on the other side.

Make your own guards. It is easy. If you have trouble clearing the nut on the grinder shaft, just leave a hole that just clears the nut.
I made my own grinder guard for my STERLING drill grinder. The early models, like mine, did not have a grinder stone explosion guard.
EDIT IN: About 70 yeas ago, one of our neighbours sharpened knives. He discovered if he increased the surface speed of the grind stone he got a better and finer edge on the knives. His favorite grind stone was one of those big round stones that had been mounted on a foot operated treadle. Dad said the neighbour was stoned to death when the sandstone grinder wheel turned to shrapnel. Dad said the stone was running about 600 rpm when it came apart.

Awesome find.

The serial number 10/52 is the month and year.

These vintage Baldors were very expensive in their day ( as they are now). Google “Baldor Bench Grinder Model 8250” under Vintage Machinery.org and you’ll very likely see similar machines listed with different backgrounds supplied by their owners.

I spent hours researching a 1930s Baldor last year ( I was forwarded vintage pdf catalogs and spoke with an ancient parts rep at Baldor’s parent co-He knew everything). Your case style with the bands as they are, plus the ID plate style and location indicate early 50s as well🤙🏼.

As others have said, make a cardboard template of the side shroud, and fabricate one ( or have it done) yourself out of plate.

If you go to an online metal supply ( King Metals, etc) they sell pre formed discs (in various sizes with conical and other pressed shapes similar to OEM) which can be welded over the center for the wheel mount hardware relief; you could maintain an original flavor this way.

Your high quality grinder is worth the extra effort for safety and style. If you need to ,install new bearings and a chord, you’ll have an outstanding machine-The 1937 I had was 1 Hp and it ran smooth , strong and whisper quiet.

Have fun and keep us updated!
