I'm looking for a good bench grinder. I found a Baldor 8" grinder, 3/4 HP. What would be a fair offer for it, assuming it's in decent but not pristine shape?

Don't let that get away from you. As long as bearings aren't bad , which I would assume can be replaced that grinder would be a good score.

I got an 8" - 3/4 horse Baldor on ebay a year or so ago for $200. and have been very happy with it and what I paid. Powerful machine and American made to boot.

So it sounds like the $175 he's asking for it is a fair price if the bearings are in good shape. Thank guys for your help. I will report back if he's not sold it yet.

Even if the bearings are shot, they're industry standard and easily replaced.

I got a Sioux 8" 3/4HP pedestal grinder (with the pedestal) off eBay for $31.

Just for comparison.

There was one like that locally on Craigslist for $60. I called about it and asked the guy to get back to me as I had a question he couldn't answer on the spot. A few hours later it was gone from Craigslist. I should have just bought the freaking thing!

I wouldn't worry about bad bearings, use 'em to get a healthy discount if they are bad. I just replaced a bad bearing in my 8" Dayton, the bearing was $17 and it didn't take me long at all. Grainger didn't stock the bearing so I tried NAPA, the bearing crossed over to an alternator bearing.

I picked one up this past summer for $35. :D I'd have happily paid three times that.

Mine needed a touch of TLC (as per the link) but really not much more than cleaning and paint. Nothing was cracked, broken or stripped.

If you can get a working Baldor *anything* for less than $200, get it.

Doc.
