I was using my old baldor 7307 1/2hp and about 10 min into using it, I put a little bit of load on it and it powered down big time? It was still on but running very slow

Didn’t know what the deal was, didn’t want to cause further damage so shut it off

Anyone have an idea?

Waiting for experienced guys to chime in. Do Baldor motors of that size have run capacitors? If so, that might be the problem.

My 7" 1/2HP Baldor has a run cap. It does not have a start cap or a centrifical switch.

It might have a thermal overload that get's reset. Turn it on and if it doesn't come up to speed then shut it off immediately. Test the cap and the windings. Don't let it run at less then nameplate speed or it could fry the start windings.

How do we test capacitors? I don’t have a Fluke whatever to measure that kind of thing? Just a regular VOM multi meter.

Run cap could be bad. There's no start capacitor, but the run cap is required to maintain speed and power

With a regular DMM about all you can do is see if it's open or shorted. There are plenty of inexpensive DMM's with a capacitance scale. With an old analog meter you can watch the deflection of the needle to see it charge/discharge.

You can also visually inspect the cap for bulging or maybe get a motor shop to test it for you.

You could also just replace the cap if the windings test good. It's probably <$5. (6 MFD, 370VAC)
