Baldor...Isn't this one kinda high priced?

I've read posts on Garage Journal that Baldor bench grinders are your best buy. So I found this one used on Craigslist, right in my hometown area. But it seems pricey to me. Can someone kindly give me an opinion on that? If it really is a good buy, I may go look at it tomorrow. Thanks so much.

That, Sir, is known as a carbide or tool grinder. Used for sharpening, of all things, carbide tooling. Or HSS if you prefer. The tables tilt and can be set to precise angles, and it uses special wheels. Well worth the asking price, but by no means can it be used as a general purpose shop grinder.

Oh, and those are over $1000 new.

As mentioned above, it's a tool grinder, and at $200 is a superb deal.

Normally these come with a green wheel, and a diamond wheel, the green wheel is for setting the angle of the tool/pre-grinding, the diamond wheel is for dressing the cutting edge. Green is the color designation for grinding wheels/stones meant for use with carbide.

Just the two wheels on the grinder cost well over $200 alone. The diamond wheels can cost $250+ each. The green wheels run $50+

$200 is a good deal for that grinder. It looks to be 110v since there's a power cord wrapped around it.

Forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but just to be clear, this grinder is designed specifically for sharpening cutting tools such as lathe bits. It is a tool and cutter grinder.

It is NOT a general purpose bench grinder, so if that is what you need, this is not it.

However, as everyone has pointed out, at $200 this grinder is a VERY good deal (a new one costs $1,289 at MSC (MSC #09010018), so you could snap this one up, re-sell it for a profit, and use the money to buy the Baldor bench grinder you want.

If you really DO want a tool and cutter grinder, then go for it.

Thanks so much. Indeed, I do want a general purpose bench grinder (I have a Craftsman unit now...I'm just wanting a better unit at a bargain price; that's just good fun treasure hunting for me!)

But when I became clear to me what this tool is for, and what it is worth, it intrigued me anyway. I had planned to buy it and EITHER resell it, or share it with my brother-in-law who is a retired tool maker/model maker, with a Bridgeport in his home garage.

But no matter; the first time I got a reply from the guy, it was to tell me he just now sold it to somebody. So I never had a phone number or address, and couldn't go see it. Maybe someone from Garage Journal got it? Hope so.
