Baldor on CL

I bought this Baldor grinder on CL for $40. Its a 612. All i can find on the Internet is a 612e or 612r, so i think i did ok on the price but not positive. I must admit I don't know much about bench grinders. This is 1/3hp and I would like to put some wire wheels on it. Are the RPMs and HP on this grinder ok for wire wheels or is it too much/not enough? Also, I have a Craftsman block grinder 397.19580 with same HP and RPMs as my Baldor, but the craftsman grinder doesn’t run as smooth as the Baldor. Since one grinder runs smoother than the other does it matter which one has grinding wheels and one wire wheels? Also, there is a different grinder on CL that i can't identify. I tried contacting the owner but person said they are selling for a friend and they knew nothing about make or model. Can anyone identify the grinder in 2nd picture? Its very blurry.

That Baldor is totally complete with eyeshields and guards, and seems a shame to strip it down for use with wire wheels, but it would work fine with 6-inch wire wheels. I use a 1/2hp CM block for that duty, and it barely gets warm, so I'd imagine a 1/3hp version would suffice for casual use.

Regarding the grinder in the blurry pic, I'd bet it was a Wissota 1/3hp. It looks just like my Milwaukee-branded Wissota.

Thanks for the input. I will definitely take your advice and keep the Baldor intact. It works awesome so will definitely keep it as a grinder.

Good score on the Baldor, if the Craftsman is running rough, you may want to throw in some new bearings. I would use the Craftsman for the wire wheel personally, that Baldor is too clean!

Thanks everyone.
The Craftsman actually runs real well but of the two the Baldor is the smoothest. I'm hoping that other picture is a Wissota grinder. Would love to have one of those. I have a hand crank Wissota too. Guess I'm kinda addicted to grinders!!

A number of people have burned out the ever so loved block grinders due to wire wheels. Use caution. Granted they were probably using too muc pressure or a wider than should wheel.

I was one of those people, mine was a 1/4hp though. 1/3 would be the least I would use and actually 1/2 of more would be better.

Thanks for the advice. I just have some light duty use. I have some old rusted wrenches I would like to try make shine again.

It's definitely a clone if not a true Wissota, the blue label is throwing me off though. :dunno:
