I know this is dumb question but here goes. I know what the hammer side of a ball peen hammer head is used for but what is the peen side mostly used for?
It is used for 2 main uses- peening metal and shaping metal.
It's for when you swing and miss, and hit yourself in the peen and balls

ball peen hammers most important use is for Rotor retaining screws that are SEIZED up!
Set the ball end against it and wack the flat end with another hammer. Doesn't mess up the screw too bad and turns right out

Hammer face to hammer face is a bad idea.![]()
Rivets when I was in the seventh grade metal shop they taught us how to rivet a sheet metal pan I recently riveted the straps on my tailgate the same way
guess they didn't teach you sentence structure, as in periods, and capital letters to begin sentences...

works good for fixing the bolt holes on stamped steel valve covers and oil pans that have been over-torqued.

How about an alternate use....since I just did this in my kitchen.
Use the ball peen head to make a nice uniform divot wherever you have nail/screw holes in drywall. Hitting the flat face with the palm of your hand provides enough force. Then you can fill the divot with spackle and sand down to a perfectly flush surface finish before priming and painting.
Also works well to flare copper tubing. Done that many times.
