I have a regular band-it tool.

but just got a bunch of Band-it CENTER PUNCH clamps.

Can I just use a punch and a hammer to set the clamps" I will be using them to connect a snow fence to t-posts (heavy load and high winds are breaking zip-clips and these were cheaper).

Check out this as an alternative - www.clamptitetools.net . You can use lots of different wire types to tie. Just a thought.

I have seen those (and have tried a DIY version), but I bought the Band-it clamps for $5 for 100

You shouldn't have any issue. I've done it as you described in the past.
