Well I did it, I was able to save this band saw, service it and it is running good.

The upper wheel guide has a crack in it. I'm not really sure which way I want to repair it, I can fabricate a new part, or repair the damaged one.

Maybe someone has a solution?

The lower bearings were frozen, I cleaned them up, packed the bearings, and now it works slicker than snot. The spindle was chewed up, I was able to salvage everything.

The set up was all screwed up, I moved the band saw on the table and mounted the motor, and I installed a switch.

Below photo, the way that the seller installed the band saw.

I have a few parts from a later 103.24280 Craftsman bandsaw that I posed in the classified section, including a upper wheel tensioner/guide. Part of it may fit yours.

That bandsaw looks pretty old and rusty. Are you going to clean the table? It's pretty hard to find the parts. How bad is the crack on the wheel guide? Try to email Sears, the band saw maybe obsolete but they might be able to supply you the parts that you need. Just give them the correct part numbers.

I'm really happy with the saw, the part has been sourced. The age of the saw prevents me from getting parts from Sears.

I don't care about age, I care about quality.

Subscribed.

I have the same model sitting on the floor of my shop that needs a rebuild. It's been there for months, but I still haven't gotten to it yet.

In behind Jake, I too have the same model but have not had time to inspect it for hidden damage like yours. I will be watching.

The lower bearings need to be serviced, packed with grease, the tool is well made. The Achilles heel is the upper wheel guide, it is made of aluminum. I'm going to make one out of steel later on, however I've sourced a part for it.

Thanks for all of your help, this is a great tool and I'm really happy that I can use it, that it's been restored and not put into a landfill.

I was given this exact saw by my father in law and the upper wheel fulcrum is in two pieces. Is there anyway to repair it? Where were you able to find a replacement?

Unfortunately, there is no way to repair it. I am in the middle of rebuilding a Craftsman 103 bandsaw as well with a broken pivot. I decided to order some 1.5" aluminum rod and some 3/8" rectangle flats.... Gonna build a 6061 replacement! Should outlast me! :rocker:

two steel zip-ties can be installed running vertically, up and around the back of the mount....if you can get them tight enough they can keep it from cracking any further. I actually snapped by bracket in 2 pieces, and used the stainless steel clamps from the hardware store to hold it for over a year and it actually worked as if it never broke....I eventually found a new bracket which I have on there now, but the repair held for a long time

once you get the bands on, don't kill them super tight because once the upper wheel is back on the spindle, the weight of that further tightens the zip-ties.....then tensioning the blade does even more....its like a self tightening system.....hope it helps!
