What do you guys use for hearing protection while out in the garage? How many of you say "WHAT?" because you don't use any :). Anyway I have a two pairs of banded earplugs made by Moldex with actual latex? earplugs on them and I can't seem to find a replacement. I've ordered two different pairs of Radian brands from Amazon. One had a gummy rubber style plug that broke the tips off the second use, the other pair I got I thought I was ordering rubber plugs but they have foam tips and they are exactly what I don't want (get too dirty too quick). Links to the offenders.

I use corded disposables. They have a great attenuation rating, are cheap and the cord is incredibly handy.

I have disposables, but it seems like I'm always putting in, taking them out, and they get dirty. that's why I like the bands, quick on/off, and can be washed in soap and water.

i have the custom dyi Radians ear plug. I love them. I put some string in the puddy when it was soft and they work great. Take them out and hang around your neck. Great protection and since they are molded to your ear they are comfortable.

I made a set of these, I use them under my muffs when I go shooting. They're OK, not sure I molded them 100 percent right. Wish I would have thought of the string idea when I made them, as they can sometimes be hard to get out.

As for muffs, sometimes they are bulky, but I have a few sets of them in the garage.

I like the bands cause when I'm not using them I can wear them around my, neck/head and they travel with me and I don't end up setting them down or misplacing them.

Thank you all for your responses.

I picked up a pair from home depot with a rigid band, I dont think they're washable and they are dirty but I'm still using them for work. I know, without a brand this post was super helpful.

I use a pair of military issue Howard-Leight ear defenders. I figure if they're good enough for jet engine noise, they're more than good enough for air tools.

I work around noisy jet engines, everyone wears earplugs. Several of my buddies have gotten ear infections as they keep reusing ear plugs. Apparently that is very painful. I use fresh disposables, I think the attenuation rating is better on disposables anyway and they are cheap cheap cheap.

I use these, which I get from Enco:

MUCH better than the 3M version. These have the little buds that don't go all the way into your ear, they just rest over your ear canal. I'm a fanatic about hearing protection (I have nearly perfect hearing and I run sound systems for local bands) and these meet my needs.

I particularly like these in a 'class' situation...the instructor is talking, then does something with power tools, then talking. I wear these when attending local metal meets where people can start pounding on metal at any moment. They stay around my neck and I just pop them in my ears when loud noises start.

They are not that expensive and they come with a spare set of ear pods.

I've tried a few styles and brands and this is my favorite, so far.

Thank you Jeremy, the blue banded ones in the picture are very similar to what I have, and was looking for.

Cheap peltor ones I got at home depot on a string in a pack of 3. They are rubber of some kind. If I really want to I can wear my peltor muffs I use when at the range. The little ear plugs really helped when I was rapid firing a FN FAL (.308 and LOUD) awhile back so I trust them for other noisy things.

I really like my Surefire EP4s. Comfy, clean up nice, and really take the edge off loud stuff while still letting me hear things like people talking.

They look like 3m to me.

I like disposables or muffs (mostly winter) I don't like the idea of crusty ear plugs.

I use these. I have three pair b/c I lose them. They have replacement plugs. I also wash them in soap and water and won't hesitate toss them. They are much more confortable than the blue ones from lowes /HD because the band is a little larger. I also have 3sets of ear muffs and a box of disposables from HF thst are individually wrapped. I wear the banded outside, usually use ear muffs for machine tools in the bsmt and disposables if in outside and can't find my ears. I try to be diligent about hearing protection.

I use the Howard Leight type however I got my son to go to hearing specialists years ago and they custom made his ear plugs with a mould from ear for a perfect fit. The ear plugs were a gift I added to a Garnet tube amp I had bought him.

These are the 3M Peltors to have! (If you like muffs.) I started with the $25ish black and red ones from Lowes, then discovered that just a few dollars more got me these. Now I have one pair on a hook at each end of my garage, and one pair for my desk at work because my coworkers are jabbering monkeys. (When they really won't shut up, I put in dispoable foam plugs, and then the Peltors over the top of them.)

Drawback: they're bulky for under-car stuff and my limited gun range experience was that they bumped into some rifle stocks (but I'm a total novice with that stuff.)
