My neighbor is looking at this bandsaw and needs to know what the brand is and thoughts on it before he goes to look at it. I think its used to cut metal, or thats what he thinks rather. I have not ever seen anything like it myself.

He's looking at a $100 price tag?

That's very similar to my Craftex saw which I bought at Busy Bee Tools. The difference between these ones and the more common 4"x6" horizantal band saws is that it has a swivel head. I have both and the swivel head is easier to use in that you don't have to maneuver the material you are cutting into place when you want to cut on an angle. You simply adjust (swivel) the head to the angle you want. This is very helpful if you are cutting long pieces in tight quarters. They don't cost much more than the non-swivel heads and they are well worth the small difference.

EDIT: And yes ... it is for metal.

It the vise stationary? If you swivel the head for a 45 degree cut does that mean you have several inches of unsupported material between the end of the vise and the blade?

To each his own. I use this saw much more than my plasma cutter and it's faster and more accurate, especially if you are making multiple production cuts.

Yes but that's not a problem.

That is really cool. I would have thought that with the unsupported material would mean a crocked cut. If you have a picture handy I would be interested. I wonder if you could convert a standard HF special to swing…..

^^^ I'll see if I can take some picture in a few days (won't be in my shop until then). Converting a standard saw would be tough given all of the cast iron pieces involved.

For those interested you might find this site useful ... [email protected]

Believe it or not that is not the worst thing in the world. The Chinese band saws can be made to work pretty well with a little tweaking. The link above to the 4X6 group above has all the information he needs. For $100 it would already be in my garage.

Buy it. I have the HF model, bought on sale for $180. I use the hell out of it. Put a bi-metal blade on it and it's good enough. If you want precise cutting - maybe, maybe not. I personally don't care if a cut is .030 off vertical, I can still easily hack pieces off 2" square steel bars. Try that with a hack saw or plasma. All the tweaking and info you need to care and feed one of those can be found at the Yahoo group site.
