Bang for your buck 3/8 us socket set

At my new job I found I've been using a lot of the other guys socket sets. I have a lot of metric sockets but no sae stuff. I'm looking for a nice us made set with sockets ratchet extensions. I have all 4 of the tool truck dealers but I would rather save some bucks.

I think USA made Craftsman will be the cheapest, the new ones are china, but USA is still out there. Or you could step up to SK...still less than the truck brands

I would rather have new so all new ones are Chinese? I've been looking at SK never used that type of ratchet before.

Get that sk set you will have many good years out of those sockets and ratchet, as they are well made.

the new craftsman are chinese but many stores still have the old USA made stock on the shelves. Once it's gone it's gone. The SK would be a better set of you can afford them. SK is Definitely better for a professional setting

and if you break the craftsman stuff you will eventually end up with chinese replacements

A Cman set may temporarily hold you over but I don't think it's going to hold up to daily use as a mechanic, if that's what you're doing.

You could buy the Cman stuff till you can upgrade and buy the SK set or truck brand stuff. Once you buy something else as an upgraded replacement, take your Cman set home for personal use.


No shame in starting out small or buying some decent used stuff.

I'll second SK. If you can hold out for a bit, there are killer deals to be had on them. I have a 3/8 general service SAE set that's probably 10-20 years old than I am that I use almost exclusively at home -- they aren't pretty but they work perfect. I liked that set so much I bought a 3/8 metric socket set to compliment it. The new stuff's just as good as the old stuff.

I'd also recommend Williams and Proto. If this set will see a lot of mileage (i.e. you're a mechanic of some sort), it might be worth it in the long run to go with a truck brand if you have one that calls on your workplace regularly.

I would probably go JH williams or Blackhawk. Look up the model number as both companies have import and US made lines.

searsoutlet.com has a bunch of 3/8" and 1/2" sets for dirt cheap right now, all USA made too. picked up a 1/2" deep metric set just a few days ago for $24, they also have the combo sets of metric and standard 3/8" deep sets for $20 IIRC.

i have no issue buying them still, i dont break sockets nearly enough to pass up deal like that. if they were 100 or more dollars a set, i would think twice about warranty and such. not at $20 for USA

What about Masterforce? On par prices with Craftsman USA stuff, but they (masterforce) are still made in the USA, so warranty replacements will be USA, not Chinese.

If not, get the SK sets.

Check out Wright, on their website. I love my Wright tools. The ratchets feel really great and hold up well under hard use. They are American made in Barberton, Ohio. They honor their warranty with no hassles.
