Bank run gravel

Excavation for my new garage is to start this Sunday but the excavator plans on using bank run gravel for backfill and under the garage slab. What is bank run gravel? Is this standard practice and any concerns here? I think he is using it because it is cheap for him.

Bank run is gravel as it comes form the ground before it has been screened and separated so there is sand, small gravel, larger gravel and rocks all mixed together. It makes for good backfill so you shouldn't have any issues. I placed many thousands of cubic yards of the stuff back in the day.

What they call "pit run" around here sets up very hard with time/settling. Good stuff for the price.

Just make sure he compacts it with a vibratory roller or plate tamper so.

Around here too they also call it pit run. So if you put the two names together do you get money pit I wonder?

Put run in my neck of the woods as well.

It's what we used for under-slab prep and backfill and seemed to pack down quite hard (and the price was right).
