Greetings! Newbie needs help please..........Anyone heard of a "Banner" bench grinder? It's six inch wheels, black in color. You plull a handle to turn it on, in lieu of a switch. Found it on craig's list.....Would love to have a Wissota or Baldor. Any advise on the Banner would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to GJ, kev.

Not familiar with the Banner brand. Sounds unique the way you describe it.

Can you post a link to the CL add for it and see if any others are familiar with it? My grinder is the one my dad had for years. I'm not sure it even has a brand name.

What are the specs on the motor plate? It looks very similar to my chinese junk one, although it doesn't share the same name. The specs on the motor, especially the amps and hp, will help a bunch.

Kev,
It's a common generic Taiwan grinder from the 80's-90's that was private labeled for tens of thousand billion (TTB) brands and sold everywhere, many times with red blooded American sounding names.....................

That said,
I've had one for 25 years of hard and very frequent use. It has been fine through at least 3-4 wheel sets and is still very serviceable.
I had to replace a switch once years ago. It can be overloaded sometimes but no more than anything else.

After careful consideration, I decided to purchase a Jet from Amazon. com. I went to a local industrial supplier for Jet and was impressed. Couldn't justify spending double for the Baldor.

Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear ya on the Baldor price. I do a lot of polishing and my MasterCrap grinder has been doing the same job at $45 that a Baldor would do for $445!!

If you want a good grinder, look for a early 1970's or older Delta / Rockwell they are a very smooth running machine, 2nd choice is Baldor, you get what you pay for, buy Chinese & all you get is throwaway junk.....

With Chinese "tools" they are junk even before they go in the box at the factory, old Baldor & Rockwell/Delta are still going strong after 30-50 years.:bounce:

Now yer Talkin'! :)
I guess I'd pay 100.00 but would be much happier at 50.00.............

It's a very good 6" grinder but that one might have been repainted.
Make sure it runs smooth.

Not to hijack, but does anyone have experience with one of these 8" "combo" bench grinders? I see them on ebay, I know they are Chinese made, I'm wondering what "good" one they copied, I hadn't seen one like it before....Looks like it would be handy. The only downside for me is that I usually configure my bench grinders with a grindstone on one side and a wire wheel on the other....Hmmm......
