Greetings,

Does anyone know a place to get round, square, hex, or any other bar stock at a reasonable price?

Thanks,
Gary

Shipping pretty much kills the cost of steel. I'd recommend calling a few of your local welding shops and see what they'll sell you some for.

onlinemetals.com is a pretty popular online place and I use it for specialty stuff that my local welding shop cannot source.

alro metals online can get you about anything you need and they are reasonable. A lot of the shops around here use them when they need small quantities of metal for a job. they will even cut to size

The local steel supply should have what you need. If you're near a bigger city they usually have used steel suppliers also. I'm near Portland and if you don't mind a little scrounging you can save some money.

I'm north of Columbus so unluckily I can't recommend somebody local. I'd grab a Cinncinnati phone book and check out the yellow pages.

Funny, I work in the tool steel world, we actually supply Alro on some grades of steel. I was actually going to suggest them or online metals on the consumer level. You can also check with Peerless Steel. They do a lot of smaller orders and can ship UPS. Just out of curiosity what grade and sizes are you looking for?

GM if your right outside of Cinci check with American metal supply . I buy quite a bit from them here and know they have a Cincy office . You might also see if there is a Metal supermarkets there as I buy alot of specialty stuff in small quantities from them such as brass round and brass hex . I dig through Americans cutoff pile about once a month and usually walk out with a pretty good bit of cutoffs for $20.00.

Depending on how much you need, you can buy from salvage yards at scrap price by weight.

I am really just looking for short fall pieces of different types so I can have it in the shop if and when I need it.

Thanks,
Gary

I'm looking for short fall pieces about 1 1/2 or less in diameter of diffferent types (Stainless, Brass, Cold Roll, Acetal, etc. I do have a couple of aluminum pieces, 1 2" x 24" and one 1 1/4" x 24.

I would like to have some Hex, Round, Square stock.

Thanks,
Gary

I just called the local American Metal Supply and she said that they sell short fall pieces. They never know what is out there I just have to stop up and look. She said Stainless is $2.40 a lb.and Aluminum is $2.35 a pound and I don't remember what she said for cold or hot roll.

EDIT: We also have a Metals Supermarket and they said the same (except he didn't give any prices).

Thanks for the info.

Gary the Metals supermarkets are usually franchises so if they get used to seeing you and you spend some money with them ( not piles of it ) they will usually treat you right . The last time I walked into mine I grabbed a small hunk of 1/2" aluminum plate a piece of 3/8" X2" steel bar stock and he actually cut me 6" of 2&1/2" round bar aluminum rar all $10.00 out the door . I seldome spend more than $20.00 at American metals unless I am buying 20' sticks of material and even on those they treat me right .

I hope I have the same experience. I'm going to run out there Friday (I will be on that side of town).

The cheapest place I have found for little stuff is an ornamental iron supply. And they have a bent and.or rusty pile they sell dirt cheap. For larger and plate I go to a supply that buys scrap and fall from big industry and sells it to little industry or really anyone by the lb.
