Those wrenches are a total mystery. They don’t appear in any of the known catalogs including Alloy Artifacts references that they don’t make public. Judging by their appearance they are likely postwar and quite a few were unmarked, likely for contract sales to retailers. Here is my unmarked NOS set. It goes up to 1” but there were larger wrenches available in this style.

Thanks for the reply, Now I don't feel bad about not finding anything about them. I don't think mine will look that nice after I clean them, but I do like the look of them.

Picked up this sweet pair of pliars. Cad plated and in great shape! I don't recognize the pattern on the handle? D42Jeep you have any of these?

As a matter of fact there are a few of those residing in the Barcalo shrine. In terms of when they were made, my best guess is early to late ‘50s. There were quite a few handle patterns over the years.5E3B46C5-F25F-4AD6-AC43-A9493C5056CF.png1879F380-CDE1-4603-8A60-7480890DBA03.jpegE2CC6987-B37D-4DFC-B4DD-931BBA7849F6.jpegB21F8B06-1112-4FEE-A89D-DC2C52F83AEF.jpeg66B64FB0-C339-4904-A8C8-F36FCC69C5EF.jpegEBC98E47-39AC-4023-B487-ABD8D4080E70.jpeg466D990D-0BCB-4884-B380-55B5C7E89FFD.jpeg55145497-A380-4F70-82D9-6A6A2C660860.jpegFCCAB76C-9F09-443A-9E05-F926D6691514.jpeg

Wow D42 I didn't realize how many different styles and patterns Barcalo had on their pliars!

Here's one of those "Mastercraft" wrenches. Had this a while in the box at our shop. It is Barcalo made, right?

I haven’t run across any flat panel Barcalo combination wrenches. That one has more of a Thorsen look to me, although others made similar combos.
I picked up this 3/8” Barcaloy combo to make all of the wrenches in this little roll match one another.5A06348F-BBD2-4136-89F4-9A3991553387.jpeg0F7A9F60-7724-4078-87DA-291FA0A4B815.jpeg49FF2FC8-FE58-43A3-A054-2D726AA428BF.jpeg8379EE64-81CC-4BF3-A0CE-571AC1E92494.jpeg

A couple of Ford GPW toolset no ISN Barcalo wrenches arrived in the mail today from a seller I buy from frequently. They are GMTK correct as well. It’s nice to see some that are in such nice condition.

Ah, I see what you mean. The Barcalo's have a raised panel. I was looking at a newer doe barcalo with a flat panel not realizing I want comparing correctly. Clearly the Mastercraft was made by some other company.

Here's my few Barcalo Buffalo combo wrenches, and one adjustable.
Can anyone date them ? Are they rare? I am thinking of listing them for sale. What should I ask?

I wouldn’t call them rare, exactly. I haven’t found any dating information on your auto kit style combination wrenches although by 1958 they had gone away from the hole in the center of the wrench and were using a clip to hold the sets together. The only dating documentation on your adjustable wrench comes from an 1942 dated ad showing that style of wrench. They don’t show up in any available catalogs. They are not particularly rare either. The only way to determine value would be to list them on an eBay auction with a starting price that you would be willing to take and see if you get any bids.

I picked up a 27-C wrench yesterday wearing cadmium plating. It is interesting to note the differences between that one and another wrench in the same size. The size of the branding is smaller on this one and the reverse side is marked -CHROME-MOLYBDENUM-. I tried searching for that alloy in this thread and nothing came up. I am guessing that marking takes this wrench out of the war time category. Is it earlier or later??

The Chrome Moly marked wrenches are pre or very early war before the metal restrictions kicked in. The other one would be considered wartime and correct for a Jeep onboard toolset or a GMTK. Surprisingly, I don’t have an example of a raised panel chrome moly DOE wrench.

I've been going through my older wrenches. Putting them together by maker. I'm thinking of narrowing my searches to make a set of.....something.
That way I can possibly sell/trade some to others who need them. Anyway, this is my small assortment of Barcalo/Barcalo Buffalo

Here is my fun find from yesterday, a set of 5 DOE Barcalo wrenches in a clip. The Estate sale person running it pulled one out, realized it wasn't a name she new, and gave me it with 3 other tools for $5. Looks like someone posted a similar set upthread. The back of the wrenches are all blank. I saw the catalog link near that showed a 1937 catalog. But my clamp is fixed, so probably a bit newer. Don't see any forge marks on them

Guy seemed to be a plumber based on all the pipe wrenches around, so the rust spots aren't surprising.

That style with the thick jaws is quite early. On the more modern cutters they are much more conventional in appearance.

Oh yeah I can pick these early Barcalos out in a pile of tools because of those thick jaws! I have 2 pairs now of the earlier thick jaw versions.

Is this a Barcalo? I've seen a few references to the "E" by itself here, and this seems to fit the general raised panel pattern, but the back is completely blank. The front side is E to the left off the panel, then "-7/16- DROP FORGED IN u.S.A -3/8- "

Thanks

And added it to the other 2, which I've posted in this thread before, to now make a total of 3 of these style DBE's.

I snagged this Charles E. Hall No. 16 bicycle wrench at the flea market this morning. I wish I could show it with my Charles E. Hall No. 11 bicycle wrench (see post #395 Page 10), but I can't find it! That's the trouble with having only one (now two) of something and no 'Charles E. Hall collection' drawer or shelf or bin.

I think that I only have three of the raised letter DBE in the Barcalo shrine. Definitely fairly uncommon.2679492E-52FA-4B73-91D6-02461C7A547A.jpeg02F89FAD-300D-4C1D-A269-4D2C6B065651.jpeg029607BE-927F-4765-A4AD-1B13ACE67F4B.jpeg

Regarding the raised letter wrenches, I only ever see the 3 sized wrenches that we both have including the 6 point I have. Have you ever seen them in a catalog?

Would you call the ones we have parkerized? I would think so because the steel grays would have the ends polished. Theres gotta be more out there. Guy I bought one of them from said they were from the 20's. Do we have any catalogs from the 20's.???

Don’t I wish? By now whatever finish they came with is long gone. They may have been parkerized. The ends certainly aren’t polished. The ones I posted may not even be the ones with the raised letters. Who knows?
