I found this old wrench and thought the shape looked familiar, even though it is the first B-B wrench I've seen in this style. Apparently it is from the 20s - early 30s.




It wasn't until I got it home that I figured out why it looked so familiar.

I found three larger "scoop" combos at the swap meet Friday. 1-1/16, 1-1/8, and 1-1/4.

Was lucky enough to find one of the DBE with all forged/raised lettering that a couple of you have previously posted.

Has an "A" forge mark on the back side and is 6.8 inches long.

The raised letter variants are few and far between. I think that I only have them in three sizes, all 12 point.

Haha. Did you really try to leave them? If so, why? I think of you as the Barcalo guy!?

I regret some of the -Barcalo- Buffalo wrenches I've left behind. I try not to dwell on it though.

These eight inch pliers joined the six inchers I already had. I think maybe they're cad under blue-grey paint. I also think they're handsome... just the way they are.



I'm guessing they're slightly older than the chrOmed pair and the main differences I see are in the grips' texture design and this DROP FORGED impression.





I don't try as hard to leave BB tools behind anymore. The same's (becoming) true for Thorsen tools, thanks to your enthusiasm, Don. You are a good enabler. Thank you.

Thanks. I don’t mind being an enabler. The only reason I briefly considered leaving them behind was that the seller was asking a little more for them than I usually expect to pay at garage sales, probably due to their large size. Fortunately, all of the other items I found on Friday were very reasonably priced so it wasn’t too painful to pay up for the wrenches. Here are the items I bought from that particular seller.

We have similar taste in tools. I especially like the Stanley chisel handle. It looks like the one in this photo (with paint smeared all over it). Matching handles with chisels is just as much fun as putting handles on hammers. I especially like it when the angle of the wood aligns with the chisel's socket, like on that Stanley. Most of these were re-handled after purchasing.



The ones on the left are patiently waiting for me to find handles that fit. I may indulge in making some on the lathe.

Apparently, Barcalo never made wood chisels, but here's a very cool cold chisel/punch set that sold (for good money) on ePay.



And a sweet Barcalo Buffalo Belt Buckle for sale on etsy. I don't often condone "art" made from tools, but this one's well done enough to get my approval. (I'm almost tempted to copy the design).

On Saturday a seller I’ve bought from at many of his garage sales gave me a wood chisel missing a handle. All I had to do was sharpen the chisel and unite it with the handle.

Funny, I was poking through DATAMP looking for a drill bit holder, and saw this patent, assigned to Barcalo, with the text "not known to have been produced". Nice of you guys to "just" post that, as it shows up as the first result for Chisel in this thread.

Yep. The Chrome Moly wrench is prewar and the recessed size marking combo is postwar.

That is a nice adjustable wrench with the reinforced hanging hole. I always thought of that style as being prewar but I blew up a wartime picture of a camera repair set and there is a small one clearly shown.

A collector friend in TN recently found a Barcalo DOE board on eBay and picked it up. The finish on his new one looks a little fresher than mine. Here is a picture of his new one and a couple pictures of mine.

Barcalo estate sale finds today. The tappet wrench is unmarked but I believe it was made by Barcalo. The adjustable was made by Plomb in the old Danielson factory, probably in 1956.

Hello All,

Bought this stuff today.

The big Barcalo box ends are all in nice shape.
The small 7/16-3/8 has seen some use, but still very usable.

The three 9/16-1/2 are the same, the thinner sort. The top one of these three has seen little use.

The two scoop end (scoop?) wrenches (box end TB1416 and the combo TC10) are the first I've held, they are nice in the hand.

The speeder is Hoppe Super.

The punches are nice, the centre is a Vermont American (unused), there is a 3/16 General Manufacturing, and the small punch is Made in England "Eclipse".

The two pliers are Made in West Germany, and of the same manufacturer I believe; both share the same handle pattern. The slip pliers are stamped with an old Canadian Tire Corporation logo. The other is logo-less, and heavily pitted, but other than that has seen little use.

The big, what seems to be farrier's pullers, are sweet. The only marking is a diamond shape with CGA within and Garantie written beside it. A French company I presume.

The other stuff on the bottom left is just stuff.

I found these two matching Chrome Vanadium Steel marked twins at a recent garage sale. Since they looked to be cad plated I decided to use evaporust to clean off the discoloration. It seemed to work out pretty well.

I checked Alloy Artifacts and although they show a couple of examples of the style of wrench that you and I have, they don’t suggest a year of manufacture. They don’t appear in any known catalogs so almost certainly before 1937. Maybe someday more catalogs will be found.
