We bought a 100 year old farm house near Brenham as a weekend place almost 2 years ago. I had hoped to build a barn, mostly by myself, but finding the time has been a challenge. I want to build a 30x40 pole barn with a concrete foundation and board and batten siding made of cedar or cypress.

Can anyone recommend a builder in the Brenham area?

Thanks very much...Hugh

I'm also in the Brenham area. Sandy Hill area, off FM 2621, near Independence. Where are you? We started as weekenders, and now spend more time there than we do in Houston.

I recently built two barns--horse barn and tractor barn. Used a guy out of Houston I was not happy with.

I'll ask some neighbors and see if they have any recommendations.

I'll do some asking around. I have a coworker who lives in Waller and has a hangar. He's knows a bunch of people out that way so perhaps he can provide some leads.

Talk to Jerry at JM Buildings, Bryan - he stays busy but does good work.
Have had him do several projects.
I’ve used Hawthorne, Magnolia - before and they were ok.
Their concrete work was a little...ehh.
You could also talk to Archery Buildings, Madisonville I think - got a quote on a project a few years ago but they were a little spendy.

One thing to be picky about is the concrete finish work, if that kind of detail is important to you.
Whoever you go with be a squeaky wheel from the beginning on your expectations.
These guys have a lot of customers that don’t really care as long as the concrete is level where it should be.
I know several of the concrete guys the metal building builders in this area use and their form and finish work can be very nice.
However, if they are left to do it the fastest way they can, they will get sloppy around the edges.

Good luck on your project!

Did you hear from DDM? I've not used them personally, but one of the owners is a nephew of a close friend. Good family, honest people, but like I said, not used them myself.

Beware. There is a dirtbag thief in the pole barn business who has been running from lawsuits for years and he is all over the state. He stole some money from me and a lot more from many others. Last seen operating from UPS store addresses in College Station and Bryan. Mark Thompson; Marcus Thompson; Mark Sample; Marcus Wilson; Mark Wilson; Mark Sample. He posts the typical Craigslist ads, pics of other people's barns, takes down payment money, then demands money to pay to his 'supplier' ("send the cashier's check to them directly" he says but Google earth reveals his 'supplier' is another mail drop.) Doesn't take plastic doesn't have business cards, and a dozen other red flags. Lots more info is available but start here:

His m-o is to start the build, poles up, maybe even the whole frame, but he doesn't bring the metal you paid for and then ******. I found him out before that part, but PLEASE research whomever you consider. Google Earth street view is massively helpful but make sure to get the address of your guy and check it out. Go by and insist on seeing his business. If he doesn't have a huge yard and trucks, materials, he isn't legit.

I have contacted a couple of the companies which have been recommended. They do not recommend a metal frame structure with wood siding because it negates the primary advantage of using metal, longevity. Since I want to use wood siding, I'll need to use post & beam conctruction. This makes sense to me.

Thanks for your responses.
