I'm looking for ideas on covering the exterior of the barn/carriage doors I'm making. I will trim these to have the "x" patterns.

I want something lightweight to cover the 2 x 2 frame. T1-11? Some kind of metal siding?

Thoughts please.

I thought a zipper wa used to cover barn doors. Ha Ha. Can you show us the outside aspect of the doors? What about wood? What is the barn/garage sheathed in?

IIRC you are covering a 10x16' opening with 2 barn doors that are 10' tall and 8' wide. I assume we are looking at the frame one of these doors in the open position with sheet rock visible through the frame. Hence each of the black rectangles is 10"x4'. If so...

There are not many wood sheet products than can span 10'x4' without additional horizontal "bracing/nailers" to break up the 10' height. Not to mention that nearly all wood sheet products are 4' x 8' and would need to be quite thick (e.g. 1/2" or better) to resist buckling etc. which would almost certainly be able to twist the 2"x2" metal frame shown.

OTOH metal and some Hardie products can could span this frame with out warping it. BUT.... without additional horizontal frame members metal sheeting is susceptible to "oil canning" and HardiePanel needs additional fastener locations because it is brittle.

FWIW the X on old style barn doors was not just a "trim" element. It was usually structural.

Yes. Its a 10 x 16 opening. The exterior is Hardiplank. The doors are 8'2" wide by 10' 2 1" tall. I plan to have a horizontal trim piece at 7 feet, so I can add another horizontal brace there.

I'm open for all ideas.

Here is the home and the garage.

I understand that the "X" is structural. If I can make it structural on my project, all the better. I am guessing I'll put some blocking in the frame and attach some type of siding. I wonder what would happen with a thin steel. Maybe .024 or something?

I have home built carriage doors. For my outside sheeting I went to a local metal building fabricator and they cut my pieces to measurement (this roll steel at 24 gauge) and hemmed the outside edges. Works well for me.

Thanks Dale! How did you attach the metal to the frame and how much framing did you put underneath?
