I bought this vise for $10, put new hardware on it and evnetually replaced main screw / eyelet. I know it's not worth anything now but does anyone know what it started life out as?

Looks like a Taiwan made Duracraft vise to me. You can find these on Craigslist by the truck load for 20 bucks.

Could be an Omega or Allied vise. I have one too, 20 bucks at a garage sale. I like it. Can't have too many vises. Mine has no name at all, might be from Japan but probably Taiwan.

They're **** vises, but they are cheap, and you won't mind pounding away on them or abusing them. Better them than the nice ones....

All of the above pretty much confirms what I'd thought. It's a cheapo vise, I already broke it once & put $30 or so into fixing it.
I replaced the main screw and eyelet after breaking with some 1" acme threaded rod that I happened across in a junk shop + some 1/2" plate (drop rack at the steel yard) + 2 acme nuts.
Last night scrubbed it clean & painting it flat black.
I'll be in the market for a Yost or Ridgid soon, or I might try and get a used Reed or Athol or Whatever. It's Kalifornia, so used stuff in good shape isn't *that* much cheaper than new.
This sucker will be my beater until she's ready for the recycle pile.

Might be able to get them for 20 bucks, but vises are hard to find, and that bad boy probably retails for 50 or more.
I'm unsure where you live but you can find vises by the dozen around here. The good ones too, not the import junkers.
not bad at all for 10, better than anything at harbir freight, homedepo for a lot more. just don't use the "anvil" section to hammer on (or use it as a bearing press), that part and the sides are the weakest parts. if you don't get carried away it could last you
