I am new here and I have a question about somethig I want to do. I have a 25 by 25 2 story barn. The bottom floor I use as a shop and to store my 68 F100. It has a beam in the middle of the floor supporting the second story floor. Is there any way to use something to support that floor so I can get this support out of my way? It's an old barn that has the wooden dowls holding it all togeather and the main structure is built out of 10x10 beams. I figured you guys would know if there was a way to do it.

There's always a way, depends on how deep your pockets are. Probably best to get a structural engineer to take a look and advise you of your options.

I have a similarly sized 110 year old barn with a similar beam running right down the middle. In my case, I found that the beam, the connected floor joists for the 2nd story and the floor boards were intended to be part of the structural strength of the building. (and thus should not be removed). I found this out from talking to an Amish barn builder. Your case may be different but you'd definitely want to talk to someone before removing structure from an old barn. Just my opinion.

So is a horizontal beam the problem or are there posts supporting it which are in the way?

Sounds like the horizontal beam would have to be replaced by something capable of handling the load by itself and supported by the walls at each end. Maybe a steel beam on brick pillars?

There might be another post directly over the post that you want to remove. have you looked at into that?. If there isn't, it shouldn't be too bad of a job
