Barn Siding Looks Distorted After Spray Foam

I just had my 42x63 Pole Barn spray foamed with 3" of closed cell on the walls and 8" of open cell on the metal ceiling. After the job was done the foam seemed to push off itself and distort the metal siding. You can really see it along the horizontal 2x4's where the siding screws too. Seems like the foam went into the ribs between the metal and framing which cause it to push off and dimple around the screw heads. Also looks distorted in the empty fields. Anyone notice this with their barn after being foamed?

Sounds like the guy put it on too fast ..:(

It needs to be applied properly for both expansion and heat -- obviously expansion being critical with metal.

You will definitely have that happen if you don't have any housewrap between the metal and the foam. Probably voided your metal warranty too.

Learn to live with it. Now that it is glued to the building, removing it will be almost impossible. Miles is correct. The metal warranty is probably void now. In all of our contracts the entire building warranty is void if spray foam is applied.

I understand that learning to live with it is pretty much my only option at this point. The owner of the company is coming out this week to take a look. It doesn't help that one of the workers cut through my siding above my garage door trying to fix a blow out area....
I've ready many posts about spray foaming directly to metal and never once read about the possibility of deforming. The only thing I can rationalize is being put on to fast/thick.

Ill try and get some pics but actually hard to tell with a camera, more noticeable in person. Ill see what the company says this week. For now I'm trying to get my radiant heat turned on, winter's coming!

It is total BS that people keep saying that you will never get metal siding off of closed cell foam. I have 2" of closed cell foam on my walls and ceiling sprayed by a very experienced installer. No issues with distorting the metal, 29 gauge steel. I had a spot on the siding down at the bottom on the edge of a sheet at a rib get hit by the lawnmower and it bent the metal out some. I removed the bottom screw and pulled on the metal to release it from the insulation to give me more area to be able to bend the sheet back straight. It peeled off the insulation quite easily.

I guess it depends on the type/brand of the foam and what temperature the metal was at when it was sprayed. My barn has an attached section (24x24) so from a birds eye view looks like a T. I had them spray the 24x24 first to see how the spray foam would react with the metal because I was nervous with something so permanent. The issue with that part was the foam leaked out of the ribs above the stone veneer where it meets the metal (3' around the base of the shop except for the back. So when they foamed the large barn I had them go around with the handheld Hilti spray foam gun and seal all areas where you can see daylight above the stone, windows, and the very bottom (back of shop). So that issue was solved with no leaking but now I have the distortion. They are coming out today to assess the situation. Problem is what are my options? The positive is it was 36 degrees outside and it was 54 in the barn this morning with no heat installed.

Question for kjmustang: so your saying you have absolutely no dimples around the screw heads or anything in that matter after the foam installation? I was thinking I could back off on the screws and see if it releases? I would do that in front of the foam company owner.

Zero issues with the metal siding or roof. It was sprayed on in the fall in cooler weather and it is very hard and pretty uniform in thickness. No exterior pictures available right now.

As the owner of a spray foam company, when discussing using closed cell on post steel buildings this is the first thing I make sure to tell the client. Closed Cell gets in-between the metal and the wooden purlins and will easily push the 29 gauge metal out. You will usually notice it around the screws the most.

2 lb closed cell foam is used to lift and level concrete slabs. You better believe it will push that metal.

Open Cell will not do this as it doesn't have the same structural properties.

If the installer is very careful and goes slowly you can minimize it but it will still happen in some places.

I did my own shop with closed cell about 6 or 7 years ago and noticed it afterwords. It really doesn't look to bad especially after you run into the building with a tractor once or twice !!!

That is a nice foam install. Mine looks pretty similar on the inside as well, not as neat but pretty close. I'm sure the barn will get run into by something along the way.....I just wish the company gave me a heads up prior to spraying it.

The company should have known that it would distort the siding, unless it's the first pole building they did. And even at that is a lame excuse.

What was the outcome, same thing happened to my metal garage this weekend. I'm not happy at all!
