That looks like a nice stout unit. What's the recessed radius in the center all about?

I'm not sure... I can't find anything on the net in any of the pexto shear manuals... they have the same groove. Maybe some sort of stress relief? Makes a great place to sweep the trash into at any rate.

My Brown and Boggs 2 1/2' shear has the same 1/2-moon depression. I just picked it up a week ago and haven't done any research.

I picked it up to cut 2'x100' aluminum coil into manageable length, plus I like old tools.

It looks like you have a good shop going. Is this a hobby or work use?

Looks to me like the recess would be to be able to use your hand to pickup short pieces of metal.

Nice shear!

The shop is not mine, just where I picked it up... my shop is still under renovation but getting more full all the time.

I picked it up for side work I do, got tired of running electric shears through sheets of 20ga. Evidently the electric shears got tired of it too because the blades are shot!

Have you found any info on the Barth shear? I have a 42 inch Barth. The upper blade assembly seems to have way too much space between it and the housing it fits in. It has 2 jam bolts to the side to set the clearance which seems like a bad idea with the bolts rubbing on the blade when it is in operation. I think I am missing a piece. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Great looking shear! The recess is clearance for your hand when cutting shorter pieces. There are lots of old sheet metal trade school text books with great information on adjusting and maintaining these old shears.

I figured the recess is just an easy place to store layout tools, pens, scribes, etc.
maybe it's rounded so everything falls to the bottom of it?
Stuff stashed in it stays out of the way while working on the table's surface.

No info... must not have been very popular! The thing works great, sharp as all get out. I wish I could find a manual on it or something.

Too funny, that's what I've been using it for:rocker:
