Get done in the morning for a couple days but daughter's wedding will take care of that. Might get a little work in. Mainly pick up doors/materials and get organized. Next full day off....Dec 9th? It's hunting season, and I dont hunt anymore, everyone else is using up vacation and gone to camp. 12 hr swing shift *****.

Not much progress. Only had 2 days in the last month that were decent. Took one afternoon and stuck the door in. Seems every day off its 20 below zero. (27 below one morning) Cold winter.

Looks good. Nice project, and a ton of work! Im actually up in Iron Mountain a few times a year as that where all my inlaws are from, and a sister, and brother along with family are still living right down town. A few months back i was in Kingsford photographing the old Ford woody plant.

Winter's over? Ha, Some of the lakes are still frozen over around here. Had 60 days this winter never got above 0 deg F. Hopefully some updates soon. Sadly, very little has been done. Too dang cold and rainy. I'm only a half mile from the old Ford plant. The blasted down the old brick smokestacks a year or two ago.

As much as I wanted inside stairs, not gonna happen. Not enough room to get the trailer in and I didn't want to push my luck with the city on going bigger than what was already there. She's packed tight with 5 motorcycles, a 36" snowblower and the trailer. Ended up with about 60 36" 2x8 treated end cuts off the studs. Lumber order was running late so they sent 12 footers for the studs, only needed 9. That'll make an outside staircase down the hill on the side opposite the retaining wall. Good enough.

Very Different type of Build than I usually see.
Lots of Challenges.
Looks like you did all your homework, before attacking it.
Looks great so far.
I wish you the best of luck and a Lot of use from your new Garage!

Update....

Literally NOTHING got done over winter. Then somebody flipped a switch and we went straight into summer a week ago. Got about 4 days work in and made it count.

Grass I threw down right before that 1st November snow came in.

Painted doors and built a step.

ry%3D400

Installed and trimmed out window. Bumped it out for that garden window look. Adds a little character to the north wall, plus it makes a nice additional shelf above the work bench.

Needs siding and trim on the overhead door. Thinking an old gooseneck gas station lamp below the window...

More to follow...

The stars were in alignment with weather and schedule so took advantage and got the driveway poured.

Pulled out shrubs to trench in power from the garage.

ry%3D480

Had to pound conduit under the sidewalk, then remove siding and sheathing to access the electrical panel. Easier than ripping out the drywall and going above the door.

ry%3D480

conduit buried and wire pulled

ry%3D480

Bricked up beside the door

ry%3D480

fitting up to the retaining wall took some patience

ry%3D480

finishing touches on the stairs

ry%3D480

Insulation and sheeting in the upstairs. Ready for shelving and cabinet doors.

ry%3D480

Some reclaimed lighting from an old clothing store

ry%3D480

Ready for wiring and outside lighting. Need an old gooseneck gas station light.

More to come. Gotta snap some fresh pics.

This is an awesome setup! I really appreciate the details, especially the fitment of the bricks against the retaining wall. IMO details like that are what separate the men from the boys. Can't wait to see the wood shop set up in the top floor, I've always dreamed of having a dedicated wood shop space.

I just read the whole thread. Great use of space! Very efficient. This was my favorite picture in the entire thread. Their body language says it all.

ry%3D480

Look at all of 'em down there. Working away until after dark. Anytime we need them to do something they are too busy. But, they have plenty of time to work on this garage. What do you girls think? I hope the walls cave in...

Keep up the good work!

Here's the only other pic I have. At this rate the inside will be a winter project. Planning on turning the knee walls into built in cabinets for woodworking tools and such.

Very good design and bild for the terrain you had. You said you kept the snowblower in the bottom garage. Does it live in the upper garage during the winter? I cannot imagine moving the blower every time it snows there.

In for the wood shop build.

There's a slightly smaller snowblower up top that will fit through a 36" door. The one below is too big.
Will post pics as the inside gets done. Thanks for all the comments.

Did the inside ever get done?

Does it EVER get totally DONE? :headscrat :spit:

It's been a while. Put in some rough shelves everything seemed to get moved in and put into service as was. Life got in the way and the whole project got put on the back burner. It became a major chore to finish with all the stuff in the way. Finally got around to emptying out and working on the final touches.

So, after a long hiatus, here's the current status. Wiring is nearly complete. Finally have more than one outlet! All that's left is installing the fan to pull cool air up from the basement. Makeshift AC. Plus it'll keep any humidity down in the lower level. Got faces on all the shelving and ready for cabinet doors. One side upper shelf will be a work ledge, all the rest will get doors when I get them made. There will be some built in drawers, dorm fridge, compressor, and a couple bays for ladders and such.

Split the old kitchen bar and made an extended window ledge out of it. (Just wait until you see what my buddy made to replaced the old bar.)
