Basement utility sink draining problems

Good morning,

Naturally my utility sink has always run slow. Last week I tried scraping some hard buildup in the bottom of the sink and after running the laundry yesterday both sinks now has standing water.

I have tried plunging the sinks and drank and now I am at a standstill as nothing I do will release the excess.

Does the washer drain into the sink basin? If not your problem could be further down the line like a tree root. If the sink is the lowest drain in the house it will back up first.

Yes the washer does drain directly into the utility sink.

Disassemble the trap, or if you have a shop-vac you can see what it will **** out of your drain... Once it starts sucking air re-fill with some water and **** again, you would be amazed what nastyness it will get... I'm sure there is a lot of lint in that line.

+1. Cleaning the trap is the first step in both troublshooting more advanced plumbing issues and likely fixing your problem. Shop vac is quick and less messy but I would recomend taking it apart so you can easily see whats in there. If its supper clogged and full then likely its thr problem. If its mostly clean then the problem is further down the line.

If cleaning the U bend trap solves it then nothing to worry about. Cleaning it out only takes about 5 to 10 mins. Get a bucket and some gloves and a channel lock or slip joint pliers. Often times they are only hand tight though. Good luck.

Thanks for the recommendation. I pulled the P-trap and it was very dirty... however that did not fix the problem. From there I inserted a hand auger. the auger will go up the vent, but not down the line. I cant tell what is stuck. I cant imagine lint would cause such a blockage.

Any suggestions?

Is the vent cap near the sink where you can cover it? If so you can do that and stick the end of a shop-vac to the drain line in the wall to see what it will **** out.

Lint can form a thick sludgy mass that can block lines. Maybe drain the P-trap and everything, then heat up a bunch of water on the stove (but not boiling) and pour it down the sink to see if it help free things up?

Are you on septic or sewer? Have you tried any drain cleaners?

Is there a check valve where the line goes into the main?

How old is the house, does it have plastic plumbing?
