Basement Work Shop Anyone?

First of this is an amazing place full of info. Everyone seems to have many hobbies so I'm sure there are more like me that dabble in everything.

I'm 29 single and live alone on 5 acres. I have a house with a partial unfinished basement and attached 20x20 garage and a 30x30 pole barn.
Plan this year is to finish the attached garage and finish the pole barn for Automotive work.

So right now all my tools are in the garage. I like for everything to have its specific spot. So when the pole barn is finished I would like only auto stuff in there.
putting up a carport for boat and tractor. The garage will be finished and have minimal storage maybe small tool box.

Now I have a table saw compound sliding miter saw and all other home construction goodies.

My question is even though this is "Garage Journal" has anyone used their basement for a work shop? for their saws and cutting boards home projects?

If you do post the pics of Basement workshops as I am considering this.

Id like to be able to keep a car or two in my garage

Yup, my automotive and metalworking tools are in the garage, the home reno and woodworking tools are in the basement. I dont mix the two to help contain the different messes. I might add a few pics eventually, but we're in the final stages of a complete reno and the basement is still rather nasty and cluttered, sorry.

mine is just poured concrete walls and floor joists. Im in the process of organizing it adding storage racks and wall off the laundry storage area.

then maybe build a work shop down there.
Always thought that would be a good idea anyway for winter months and its cold and snowy you can work on house projects inside.

The biggest issue you will run into is getting materials down and finished projects out. This depends largely on layout of the house and size of projects

that is true.... there are those projects its nice to walk in the garage cut and assemble it outside. need a wood shop... haha

That what I always thought about when people have basement work shops.

Maybe with larger size basement doors it is not much of a problem:

If if the house is built into the side of a hill and the basement is on grade-level on one side it is much easier.


Would still like to see some pictures from members that have basement shops.

My buddies uncle has a concrete staircase in the garage so its a straight shot from the truck. Other than the doors you posted. Its the only practical application I've seen for a basement shop.

While I'm thinking about it OP. Check out woodworking for engineers. I know his woodshop is in the basement

As has already been said, the issue is getting goods down (solvable by pre-cutting in the garage/driveway and carrying in smaller pieces) and getting assembled pieces out (could bring back up in pieces and re-assemble...but what PITA). Not to mention you better have a really good dust collection system too or you'll have sawdust all over your house.

I have this setup to get in my basement. It made moving in and finishing off the basement way easier. I could carry 4x8 sheets of drywall into the basement by myself.

I built a room down there for tv/kids play room. The other side is mine for building rc planes and helicopters.

A house I'm looking at has a walkout basement, and when the house was built the garage was made 2 stories. The lower level is wide open to the basement, which gives tons of storage and working space, even if the house does need some work I'm foolish enough to look at the shop space and see the potential.

We don't have basements here.

But anyway, if it were me (based on the way I work) in the basement it would have to be electronics work (or any precision work) but the ventilation would need to be good if you're soldering. I wouldn't use it for woodworking, I'm not sure why. I prefer extremely good ventilation for that, so that means garage door open for cutting. Some basements are wide open but when people say "basement" I'm thinking exposed pipe, concrete, and a small window; if the smaller basement is you, you probably won't want to actually cut wood there or even do the assembly there.

As great as it sounds using my basement might not be a great idea. I don't do a lot of wood working. Mostly just house stuff. trim boards cabinets building fences...
then I have 5 acres and a pole barn I want to finish.... it is nice if its in the garage I can throw the saw in the truck and take it to the barn and work out there.
my other idea wont happen anytime soon.
Add on to the garage with another two car garage in front of existing so the wood shop will be behind the garage in the existing 20x20...
too hard to get things up and down my starts. even just a door or a whole 4x8 sheet

I had a basement shop in my previous home. It worked out fine but I would suggest you invest in some good dust collection. I also had a JDS 200 filter box. The dust will get upstairs without it, and why breathe that ****?

I use my basement as parts storage, household storage, woodworking tool storage, and extra rarely used tool storage. I have a small workbench down there that i can do small projects with after work in the winter time.

Hi, I'm building my workshop in my basement currently. I put in a nice epoxy floor for it, just painted the ceiling rafters all bright white (no real ceiling), and am doing new electrical circuits for it now. For me, it was my only option as 2 car garage is full. I'll mainly use it as a woodshop but for any project uses also. I'm also keeping all my house tools down there in a 26" bottom and top box and the garage/car tools and stuff in the garage in a separate box there. Works for me. No pics yet till I'm all done though! -- Paul
