ok, so I bought the HF $15 dollar right angle grinder, popped it open, lots of grease spread evenly, so am i ok as far as that goes? I was expecting it to maybe be gobbed in just one spot or not enough, but none of that...

Went to put a dewalt cut-off wheel on and when you tighten the lock-nut, it does not secure the cut-off wheel. The nut gets tight to the spacer, but it doesn't make contact with the wheel, maybe a 1/16" gap. It's like the ''lip'' on the spacer (that the wheel fits over) is too high, or the locknut should have a recess for the lip, but it doesn't.

Am I totally missing something here???

Most of the lock nuts have two sides, one with a lip to fit into some wheels, the other is flat. Try flipping the locknut or the backing plate/nut (if it has one)

some angle grinders can´t be used with the extra thin cutting discs (1mm )...a new nut might solve the problem

I am abusing 3 of the HF grinders. The ones I have are the orange ones and they have held up fine after I filled with Mobil 1 synthetic grease. These are not the cheapest they have as I think I paid about $16 dollars when on sale and using the 20% coupon.
Even the thin cutting discs fit fine. You may have to flip the collar over.

ok, flipped the spacer over, it does work that way, but there is no raised part that the cut-off wheel fits over and is centered by. Guess I'll have to do something with spacing or the nut as suggested. I would just drill a washer out if i had drill bits that big.

Am I just being paranoid about not liking the fact that there is no positive centering of the wheel?

I just used it with the spacer flipped over. It is machined to show a centering circle, and it just BARELY sticks up. I think it is just the usual cheapness of HF. I think they just made the side of the spacer with the short centering flange a little too short.

Flipping the nut does nothing. wow she's loud, done with her for today, til i get some ear plugs

I have the same grinder, I had to flip the nut to get a cutoff disk to snug up. Have ran tons of disks though this way, with no issues at all.

All grinders are like this. Flip the nut over. The raised area will be very small to allow thin discs to mount. You'll be just fine using it this way. Time to man up, you're using a grinder.

4.5" angle grinders can come with 2 different diameter spindle shafts, with either a 5/8" arbor or a 7/8" arbor. If the cutoff wheel isn't centered on the shaft, are you sure you have the right size cutoff wheel? Any chance your using a 7/8" cutoff disc on a 5/8" arbor?

The big dummy just held it in one spot too long while bearing down. Generating that much heat and pressure, no wonder it exploded

Even if it was a 7/8" on a 5/8" shaft, the nut should seat.

For the OP.....what you may want to do if possible is countersink both sides of the nut a little for clearance of the flange on the shaft
